Buzz words

You may see or know of many variations of the word 'freeride'. Just so that you don't get confused, here's a few a words that are regularly used to describe freeriding...and they all mean the same thing:

  • Freeskiing
  • Backcountry riding
  • Off piste skiing or snowboarding
  • Powder skiing or snowboarding

The belief is that freeriders tackle the whole mountain - not just on piste, but ride anywhere within reason, trying any turn, any jump at almost any time.

Dictionary corner: 'Free' 'Rider' (liber-vehere)

'The freerider is commonly found in the mountains by day and in bars by night. These are extreme beings to say the least -they crave the sight of white powder and hibernate during the summer months whilst scavenging for cash to pursue the dream of non stop high adrenalin activity. Although the freerider cannot be tamed, they are reasonable creatures who listen to any advice that will help their population in their quest for self-preservation.' (Mula 2000)
