Live the Dream: It's All Good Sense

Freeride guruThese are a few simple tips that (although very effective) do get overlooked when it comes to ensuring your safety:

  • Freeriding is best in a group of a minimum of three riders. This means if one person gets injured there is somebody with them while the other goes for help. Be aware that a larger group will stress the snowpack more.
  • Always check out the area you plan to ride. Don't just go off piste without knowing how to negotiate where you're going; getting stranded can mean a long journey home.
  • Before you freeride, always find out the day's forecast. The local ski patrol may give you the low down on the area you plan to ride, info on where the best powder's at and where it's safe to freeride.
  • Take a mobile phone with you. Enter the number of the local mountain rescue centre. If you get into trouble then all you have to do is press a button. This simple process can save valuable time if you have an accident, or if your group gets caught in an avalanche (but remember you can’t get a signal everywhere).
