Live the Dream: Off Piste Awareness

It always pays to be aware

Awareness can mean the difference between a good and very bad day, one you might not walk away from. By keeping an eye on the surrounding area you reduce the risk of becoming a statistic. So if you're gonna fly, look out for...

  • High levels of new snow (anything over 20 cm).
  • Convex, open slopes with high exposure.
  • High winds and cornices that form as a result.
  • Surrounding slopes being cleared for avalanches (e.g. controlled explosions).
  • North and East facing slopes where 90% of all avalanches in Europe occur.
  • Cracks in the snow.
  • Assess the run out - would an avalanche sweep you over a cliff, onto rocks etc.

Note: 50% of freeriders buried in avalanches will suffocate within 30 minutes of being under. 85% of avalanche survivors are rescued by their mates. You and a transceiver are your buddies best chance of survival.
