HEADLINES FROM THE GAMES
History of the Winter Olympics The first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix in 1924, where 258 athletes competed. This figure has increased almost ten fold, as presently the estimated number of competitiors heading to Turin is 2500. Similarly, a mere 11 of those 258 in 1924 were women, compared to the 886 who competed in Salt Lake City in 2002.
These stats reveal just how much the Winter Olympics have grown in size, as well as popularity, over the last 82 years. Turin 2006 will be bigger and better than ever before, with new events such as Boarder Cross hoping to inspire a new generation of snowsports fans.
