Winter Olympics 2006

Winter Olympics Introduction

XX Winter Olympics 2006 in Turin: 10-26 Feb 2006
The stage is set for the most prestigious Winter Sports event in the world.

On the 19th June 1999, Turin fought off strong competition from Helsinki (Finland), Klagenfurt (Austria), Poprad-Tatry (Slovakia), Sion (Switzerland) and Zakopane (Poland), to become the hosts for the 20th Winter Olympic Games 2006.

The Winter Olympics 2006 is taking place in the Italian Alps, with the main alpine events happening at the World Cup resort of Sestriere. Other snowsports events are taking place in the resorts of Bardonnechia and Sauze d'Oulx.

From 10th - 26th February 2006, look forward to two weeks of fierce competition, with the sporting elite from all over the world battling to take home the most sought after prize in winter sports - an Olympic Gold Medal.

Us Brits are hoping that we can continue our success from the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City, and pick up a few more medals...

History of the Winter Olympics
The first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix in 1924, where 258 athletes competed. This figure has increased almost ten fold, as presently the estimated number of competitiors heading to Turin is 2500. Similarly, a mere 11 of those 258 in 1924 were women, compared to the 886 who competed in Salt Lake City in 2002.

These stats reveal just how much the Winter Olympics have grown in size, as well as popularity, over the last 82 years. Turin 2006 will be bigger and better than ever before, with new events such as Boarder Cross hoping to inspire a new generation of snowsports fans.
