2009 British Land Championships kick off this Saturday

Wednesday 25 March 2009
With only a few days to go until the start of the British Land National Ski Championships 2009, excitement is building as the racers prepare to battle for the championship titles in Meribel.

The event provides an encouraging atmosphere for emerging talent

Defending overall Champions, Ed Drake and Chemmy Alcott have both had fantastic seasons and are on good form in the lead up to the event. Chemmy has made a good recovery from a fractured ankle sustained at the start of the season, producing some of her best World Cup performances to date and also achieving personal bests at the World Ski Championships in Val d’Isère.

This season has also seen Ed make his debut on the World Cup circuit with appearances in Wengen and Kvitfjell, and also at the World Championships where he recorded top 30 results on the infamous Face de Bellevarde.

This year’s competition looks set to be pretty exciting as Finlay Mickel, Noel Baxter and Andy Noble all return to the Championships after missing last year through injury. They will not have it their own way though as the younger athletes have been on impressive form this season and will be challenging for the top spots.

The Men’s British Land Downhill will be the longest in the event’s history, and will use the full Olympic piste at Meribel. Meribel is bidding for the FIS World Cup Finals in 2013 which would take place on the same piste as the British Land National Championships - so this will be great experience for the British athletes.

Anticipation surrounding the Giant Slalom competition, this year sponsored by Land Rover - the official Vehicle Partner to SnowsportGB and the British Alpine Ski Team, is also building as British Alpine Ski Team athlete and 2009 World Championship debutant, Andy Noble, is eager to regain his 2007 Giant Slalom title. In the Ladies competition, Chemmy Alcott will face a tough challenge from fellow Team members Pam Thorburn and Sophie Readman as well as from last year’s silver medallist, Louise Thomas.

We'll bring you all the results from the Ladies race on 3rd April and the Men’s race on the 4th April.
