Helmet wearing will be compulsory in Las Leñas this season

The Argentinean ski resort of Las Leñas, which opens for its 2009 season on Saturday, is the latest major resort to make the wearing of helmets by children under the age of 12 years compulsory.
The decision follows that of Vail resorts and also many parts of Austria who have also now made helmets compulsory for children following a winter in which the helmet debate was rife. The high profile death of Natasha Richardson and a crash involving a German politician sparked the debate.
"In Las Leñas guest security is our fundamental responsibility and we constantly work to improve it year after year", said Fernando Montero Commercial Director of Marketing at the Argentinean resort.
The average ski helmet costs £50, which for many people on an annual ski holiday is an added expense. To help combat this, the resort has purchased an additional 600 new helmets that have been given to the rental shops for use.
This latest move is aimed at keeping children safe on the piste and the resort hopes that this will also encourage adults to wear a helmet.
With the current trend, it seems likely that more resorts will make helmets compulsory for children in the near future.
