Big names to open over the weekend include Geilo, Trysil and Hemsedal in Norway, Keystone, Copper Mountain, Killington and Bretton Woods in the USA and Lake Louise in Canada which joins sister resort Mt. Norquay (weekends only).
Snowsports are also now available at weekends in Zinal, Switzerland and the Presena Glacier at Passo Tonale is also open. Timberline, which had been waiting for a big enough dump to open for the winter season, also fared well over the weekend receiving 71cm of fresh snow.
The bumper weekend continues the promising early start to the season at resorts such as Loveland and Arapahoe Basin in the US and on the glaciers across Europe. At Tignes conditions on the Grande Motte glacier are superb and the snow cover is good enough to ski to Val Claret. At Hintertux 18 lifts running and more than 60kms of piste are available for snowsports.
The outlook for the week ahead looks set to help more resorts open for the winter season with heavy snow expected across most of the Alps, especially in the west. Oppdal, Voss and Lillehammer in Norway are on the cusp of opening and both Obergurgl and Obertauern are due to open in the next 10 days.
North America also has plenty of the white stuff to look forward to – Breckenridge and Copper Mountain should benefit from snowfall in Colorado later this week whilst Whistler, Canada is expecting an average of 30cm every day. Both Mont St. Anne and Sun Peaks are due to open on Saturday.
