Thursday 19 November 2009

Whistler, which opened early for the winter season on Saturday 14 November, has now had a massive 250cm of new snow since last Thursday.

This news take’s the resorts fresh snow tally for November up to 418cm, more than doubling the resort’s average snowfall for the month of November of 148cm and beating the previous record of 416cm, set in 2006. The resort has been recording the snowfall since 1979.

According to the resort's website, a further 65-95 cm of fresh snow is expected by Monday 26 November, meaning the resort is on course to shatter its previous benchmark.

"The fact that we’re only 87cm from reaching the half way point of our annual average snowfall, shows how incredible the start of this season really is" said Whistler Mountain weather forecaster Anton Horvath. The annual average snowfall at Whistler Blackcomb is just over 10 metres.

“I’ve skied here for over 15 years and I’ve never seen this much snow so early in a season,” said the resort’s Communications Coordinator Stephen Butt. “It seems like every day’s snowfall is topping the last”.

The deluge of snow has meant increased work for the resort’s Operations Crew, who are aiming to open the Creekside Gondola and Garbanzo Express in time for riding on the Whistler Mountain this weekend.

The resort has announced that the operations team will have to work hard to prepapre the area for visitors, ensuring hazards are clearly signed and avalanche control is implemented – the resort is currently on a high to extreme avalanche rating.
