Alcohol safety campaign launched in ski resorts
Tuesday 01 December 2009
The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has launched a safety awareness initiative to tackle alcohol misuse in ski resorts
The campaign follows several alcohol-related accidents in ski resorts, including the death of a British student from hypothermia following a night drinking in Val d’Isere last season.
The initiative aims to make people more aware of the affects of alcohol at altitude - which can "dangerously limit your awareness of danger and cold" by way of a poster campaign.
According to skiinfo.com, the campaign will include the display of material designed to reduce alcohol misuse, which can lead to accidents both on and off the slopes.
Posters in restaurants, bars, airports and other public spaces, as well as leaflets in British tour operator owned chalets, club hotels and bars will all be used to help promote the campaign.
British tour operators including student specialists Off the Piste and Ski Alpine as well as TUI-owned Crystal Ski, Thomson Ski, First Choice Ski have all agreed to champion the initiative.
"We are committed to supporting educational projects which make a positive difference to people lives and ensure that they have good, safe fun on their holidays" said Mathew Prior, MD of TUI Ski.
The campaign is also supported by French police and rescue services and tourist offices and airports in the Savoie, Haute Savoie, Isère and Rhône regions. Geneva airport, several major Swiss ski resorts and resorts in the Italian province of Turin have also pledged their support.
