A snowboarder stranded on a lift in the Austrian Alps attracted the attention of rescuers by burning Euro notes
As reported at news.bbc.co.uk, 22-year old snowboarder Dominik Podolsky became stranded when attempting to descend the mountain using a ski lift not intended for downward trips.
In a scenario reminiscent of ski horror film Frozen, Podolsky was left 10m above the ground in temperatures as low as -18° without a mobile phone.
Podolsky’s calls for help were not heard and although the German snowboarder used techniques learned through military service to fight off hypothermia, the situation became critical when he felt himself starting to fall asleep and a growing numbness in his limbs.
As night closed in Podolsky struck upon the idea of burning paper handkerchiefs and the contents of his wallet with a cigarette lighter to make an SOS signal. Having burnt restaurant bills and business cards, the snowboarder resorted to burning €120 in notes when he was spotted by a ski-run cleaning crew.
Podolsky was subsequently taken to hospital and treated for hypothermia before being discharged. He is reportedly considering suing the lift operating company however a spokesman said Podolsky had ignored signs warning against boarding the lift.
