With just one six star event left in the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour before the men’s 2010 champion is crowned at the Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships on 21 March, Finnish rider Peetu Piiroinen will be looking to continue his run of form on Scandinavian turf at the Oakely Arctic Challenge on 7 March.
Taking place in Oslo, the Slopestyle event will provide Vancouver Halfpipe silver medallist Piiroinen an opportunity to further increase his hold on the 2010 competition, with the rider aiming for another top result after five podium finishes so far this season including two event wins.
The TTR ranking system is based on a points average with a rider’s best six scores at the end of the season divided by six for a final result. There is also a Season-End Bonus Points system which allows riders to take their final ranking score from the previous season through to count as one of their six scores.
With a current points average of 924.64, including a 940.57 from his win last season, Piiroinen is over 100 points ahead of nearest rival Iouri Podladtchikov and 200 in front of third placed Gjermund Braaten, meaning a good performance in Oslo could gift the Finnish rider the 2010 title before he even touches down at the Burton Open at Stratton Mountain.
Other TTR news In the women’s competition the six star ranking is being lead by Lisa Wiik of Norway, however just 5.91 points separate the top three so all is still to play for before the women’s title is awarded at the Roxy Chicken Jam USA at Mammoth Mountain on 28 March.
Amongst the British riders 16-year-old Bradford rider Jamie Nicholls is ranked the highest in the men’s competition, sitting in 20th position overall following a 6th place in the five star Burn River Jump event in Livigno on 26 February.
In the women’s competition 18-year old Aimee Fuller has the top place, resting 10th in the rankings after solid performances in the Burton European Open Snowboarding Championships and Roxy Chicken Jam Europe six star events this season.
