The 2010 World Cup titles are already being handed out in the German resort of Garmisch Partenkirchen after the men’s Downhill kicked off the action on Wednesday 10 March.
Swiss racer Didier Cuche finished 8th in the morning’s race, but a consistent season, including first place in the Downhill in Kvitfjell on 6 March allowed him to take his fourth World Cup title and third Downhill win in four years.
The race itself was won by Cuche’s Swiss rival Carlo Janka, who takes second overall in the Downhill, with Austrian Mario Scheiber and Canada’s Erik Guay coming in second and third but missing out on the overall event podium.
The women’s Downhill is yet to run with America’s Lindsey Vonn sure to take the title with a nearly 200 point lead over nearest rival Maria Reisch of Germany and 300 points over Sweden’s Anja Paerson.
Also still to be contested are the men’s and ladies’ Super G and Giant Slalom which will be decided on Friday and the men’s and ladies’ Slalom, which will come to a head on Saturday.
The overall World Cup winners will also emerge this weekend. Janka has moved to the top of the men’s leader board, pushing Benjamin Raich into second, with Cuche in third. The women’s overall lead board mirrors the current Downhill standings with Vonn leading ahead of Reisch and Paerson.
