Following the announcement of the members of the senior squad earlier this month, British Ski & Snowboarding (BSS), formed following the collapse of SnowsportGB, has revealed that it has found an as yet unnamed sponsor to support Britain’s top skiers for the next two years, reported a BBC Sport article.
The sponsorship gives much needed financial security to senior team members including Vancouver Olympians Ed Drake, Andy Noble, Dave Ryding, Noel Baxter and Chemmy Alcott and Ski Club sponsored rider TJ Baldwin, who graduated to the senior team following the 2009/10 season.
"We have made some really good progress and are in much better shape than we were three to four months ago” commented Dave Edwards, CEO of BSS. "The funding is secure for the next two years and the athletes are keen to get stuck into their summer programmes”.
According to BBC Sport the funding will pay for coaches and allow skiers to organise race programmes, however Edwards plans to seek further funding, potentially tapping into opportunities in the leisure industry.
An estimated £1.5m per year is needed to fund Britain’s ski and snowboard teams, which are made up of athletes in alpine, cross-country and freestyle disciplines.
