The 47th International Ski Congress in Antalya, Turkey, marked a century since the first ever annual snowsports congress in 1910 and fittingly on the agenda was developing FIS disciplines to appeal to younger generations.
The FIS has now revealed outcomes of the week-long congress which included significant developments in two areas of freestyle.
Following unanimous support, it looks almost certain a request for freestyle skier half-pipe – part of the FIS Freestyle Skiing World Championships since 2005 – to be part of the Winter Olympic Games will be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Snowboard slopestyle, a discipline with a growing movement to include it as an Olympic event, was also discussed at the congress however a submission to the IOC is not confirmed at this stage.
The popular spectator event, in which British snowboarder Jenny Jones has won three golds at the Winter X Games, was however unanimously adopted on to the program of the FIS Snowboard World Championships.
