First launched in 2008 as part of the Ski Club’s Respect the Mountain initiative, the Big Spring Clean has now become a firmly established event, each summer attracting volunteers wanting to give something back to the mountain and address the problem of littering on the slopes.
Based at CairnGorm Mountain and the Nevis Range for the third year in a row, a total of 122 helpers were on hand to gather rubbish, with items collected from the slopes including an old New York bus ticket and a tin of sardines.
At CairnGorm Mountain, where snowsports were on offer in the Ptarmigan bowl on Sunday, Ski Club organisers Betony Garner and Katie Gotla totted up 53 bags of litter collected by hard-working volunteers.
“I have had so many fantastic days on the mountain this season, the least I can do is give one back” commented Inverness-based helper Jane Davey, who was one of 76 to join in the Big Spring Clean at the Scottish resort.
Meanwhile the Ski Club’s Emma Bebb and Kate Thorman, who took the sleeper train to and from the Nevis Range clear-up, were delighted at the turnout of 46 volunteers who contributed 17 bags of litter to the Big Spring Clean effort.
"This was my second Big Spring Clean and Kate's first and we were both very impressed with how much people wanted to help out after enjoying the snow during the winter season" commented Emma.
