Following a meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland, earlier this month, Munich in Germany, Annecy in France and PyeongChang in South Korea have all been officially selected as “Candidate Cities” to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.
"The Executive Board decided that all three Applicant Cities deserved to move to the second phase of the bidding procedure" commented IOC Olympic Games Executive Director Gilbert Felli.
The three cities all had to undergo a technical assessment to assess their potential to host a successful games. This covered areas such as transport and security as well as the competition venue itself – an aspect Annecy has been asked to review.
All the Candidate Cities now have just over 6 months until 11 January 2011 to submit their Candidature Files, after which the cities in the running may be reduced to just two. The host city will then be finally decided at the IOC session on 6 July 2011 in Durban, South Africa.
