Originally invented as a means of summer training for alpine skiers, Grass Skiing has grown in popularity since its origins in Germany in the 1960s and is now a fully integrated part of the FIS calendar.
Running from May until October, the FIS Grass skiing season sees racers compete on what are known as tracked skis in the Giant Slalom, Slalom, Super G and Super Combined categories.
One of the highlights of the season is the World Cup series which kicks off in Cenkovice in the Czech Republic from 3-4 July before continuing on to Switzerland, Iran, Austria and finally Sestriere in Italy which will stage the finals from 18-19 September.
Czech racer Jan Nemec is the reigning men’s champion after beating a field of 68 to the top spot in last year's World Cup whilst Austria’s Ingrid Hirschhofer took the 2009 ladies’ title in a 21-strong field.
Also taking place this summer is the Roller Skiing World Cup, which falls under Cross Country skiing. The series began in 18 June in Germany and continues until the finals in late September in Greece.
