Portillo offers a unique skiing environment in the heart of the Andes. Unlike most ski resorts, Portillo has just one hotel, the Hotel Portillo, meaning there are only ever a maximum of 400 guests staying in the resort at a time.
Situated 102 miles or a two hour drive from the Chilean capital of Santiago, Portillo is also accessible for day visitors however from 3-10 July the resort has decided not to sell any day tickets in order to “protect the experience” of hotel guests.
The resort, which has cited “limited” snow conditions as the reason for the decision, last received snow on 23 June when 41cm was reported. The resort currently has a snow depth of around half a metre and was operating 10 of its 14 lifts on Friday 2 July.
For hotel guests staying in the resort from Saturday 3 July the good news is that – according to the weather forecast generated on Friday – 18cm is expected over the course of Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 July which should help refresh the slopes.
