Serving the resorts of Whakapapa and Turoa, Mt Ruapehu on New Zealand’s North Island reported 56,000 skier visits between Saturday 10 July and Friday 17 July, beating the 2007 record of 51,000 skier visits in a week.
A run of fine weather combined with good snow conditions contributed to influx of skiers. “It’s unusual on Ruapehu to have such a long stretch of great weather and for this to coincide with the busy school holidays was quite exceptional” commented Mt Ruapehu Marketing Manager Mike Smith.
Good conditions have also helped Mt Ruapehu pull in the crowds - Whakapapa has a snow base of over a metre at 105cm whilst Turoa has 61cm. Both resorts last received snow on Sunday 18 July, 5cm at Turoa and 2cm at Whakapapa.
