Adaptive snowsports charity Disability Snowsport UK (DSUK), which gives disabled skiers and snowboarders the opportunity to participate in snowsports along with able-bodied riders, has launched a new fundraising event - the Peak 2 Peak Cycle Challenge.
Taking place on 11 September, the challenge consists of a 70 mile cycle between Ben Nevis and Cairngorm Mountain with participants taking on heights of up to 2500ft during the journey and a gruelling 1000ft climb in the last 6 miles.
Joining the effort will be recent Paralympians Sean Rose, Anna Turley and Tim Farr, all members of the British Disabled Ski Team managed by DSUK, who will be completing the route on specialised hand bikes as part of their summer training.
‘This is a very exciting fund-raising event for us” commented DSUK CEO Fiona Young. “It’s the first time such an event has happened here and the first time we have put on a cycling event. Local community support has been terrific”.
Entry to event is open to anyone with a bike and a reasonable level of fitness. The challenge includes scheduled rest and water stops and there will be helpers stationed along the route. At the end there is a rewarding barbecue at the scenic Loch Morlich.
Anyone interested in taking part should contact fundraising@disabilitysnowsport.org.uk or call the DSUK team on 0161 749 2290 to request a registration pack. Entry is £15 and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship.
