The lightweight Alpine Pro jacket is extremely versatile

WHAT ALF SAYS: Montane recently became the first UK-based outdoor gear manufacturer in a decade to obtain a GORE-TEX® licence, and their new Alpine Pro jacket puts it to excellent use.

Constructed from lightweight 40 denier Gore-Tex Pro fabric it will appeal in particular to the backcountry brigade who like to keep things minimalist but value good design and build quality. An example of this is the jacket’s 12-13 stitch count on all seams versus a typical industry average of eight. Other examples are features such as technical tailoring around the arms to prevent arm lift raising the lower hem, articulated elbow panels which move ergonomically with your arms and slightly larger chest and bicep dimensions to accommodate winter layering.

I love this attention to detail and it continues in other aspects of the Alpine Pro. The rollaway, helmet-compatible hood has a stiffened peak and is fully adjustable to provide excellent peripheral vision when in use, whilst the collar has a microfleece chin guard and offers good protection for your lower face in bad weather.

Below this you’ll find a small zipped chest pocket and two map-sized, zipped hand warmer pockets along with an internal stretch mesh goggle pocket; this was about my only quibble with the jacket (and a minor one at that) in that I felt it could have been slightly larger to make it easier to slip your goggles into.

The whole lot is finished off with pit zips, Velcro adjustable cuffs, and an adjustable, dropped hem to give a great jacket for pretty much any mountain sport.

FOR: Great design and attention to detail

AGAINST: Goggle pocket could be bigger – but we’re being picky here
