Safety

What does the Snowsports Industry Do?

Avalanche Courses
The Ski Club in conjunction with Snow and Rock runs avalanche courses throughout the season to increase awareness

Ski Shows
At the beginning of the winter ski shows are run around the country to increase awareness of the ski industry and snowsport safety issues.

Websites
The most accessible resource is non-profit websites, informing the public on a range of safety and health information. From avalanche awareness to ski injuries a wealth of information can be found online. More information on Safety Resources.

Transceiver Courses
Avalanche transceiver courses are a fantastic method of learning how to use all of your avalanche safety equipment. On the whole these courses are only available in resort. For example; HAT in Val d’isere and SPOT in Tignes.

UK Retailers
As a response to the increased interest in safety within the snowsports industry mainstream retailers are beginning to stock a wide range of safety equipment, from helmets to probes. This competition within the industry ensures this equipment is being produced to a high level.

Qualifications
The industry is attempting to ensure that both Ski and board technicians and instructors are fully qualified in their chosen discipline. In the UK ski technicians now have to be certified to work in ski shops. And in order to work as an Instructor abroad, resorts will expect a high level qualification (BASI or equivalent) and more often than not for the instructor to be first aid qualified.
