Ski Resort Guide: Alpe d'Huez

Alpe d'Huez: Intro

Ski Club rep in resort
A vast, sunny ski area suitable for all levels in a spectacular setting - shame about the village.

Located in the Grandes Rousses massif, Alpe d'Huez (ADH) has long been popular with the French for its breathtaking scenery, alleged 360 days of sunshine per year and huge ski terrain. Unfortunately, the purpose-built town sprawls across four separate quarters, meaning accommodation and restaurants are far apart. The Altiport complex, where most chalets are, is particularly far away from the centre. However, you can stay in the more rustic villages of Vaujany and Huez, which are linked to ADH by chairlift.
Pros
  • Lots of sunny, high-altitude skiing to suit all levels.
  • Extensive choice of accommodation - apartments, chalets, hotels and B&Bs.
  • Ski pass gives loads of extra perks.
  • Great for families and has lively nightlife.
Cons
  • Too much sunshine on south-facing slopes leads to icy mornings and slushy afternoons later in the season.
  • Very few trees for bad light days.
  • Pyramid layout of the town means long walks back home at night.
