Ski Resort Guide: La Grave

La Grave: Intro

A cult destination for hardcore skiers looking for extreme off-piste. One of the world's last remaining true mountain experiences. A few words of serious warning: Many of La Grave's extreme ski routes are on glaciers - this means gaping crevasses, falling seracs and extreme avalanche danger. Furthermore, the couloirs are frequently no broader than a ski, are prone to goulottes (ice bands formed during the daily springtime freeze/thaw cycles) and offer no other way out other than down.

La Grave is a tiny, rugged mountaineering village in the heart of the Massif des Ecrins on the road between Briançon and Le Bourg d'Oisans. The mighty 3982m La Meije towers above the village - the last great peak of the Alps to be conquered, its blue glaciers and vast crevasses offer a stark reminder that La Grave defies all the stereotypes of ski resorts.
Pros
  • Wild and raw freeriding - some of the world's best.
  • Provides a unique, unspoiled piece of mountain life.
  • Will push all skiers to the very limits of their capabilities - expect to improve dramatically.
Cons
  • Being north-facing, the mountain can be toe-curlingly cold until March.
  • The mountain is frequently shut down due to bad storms.
  • There can be queues for the gondola, especially on weekends.
