Morzine
Chamonix-style valley town plugged into one of Europe�s largest linked ski areas.
For our money, Morzine is the best base from which to explore the enormous Portes du Soleil area. It combines the bustle of a busy, vibrant town with some of the finest skiing in Europe, and as such is hugely popular with British skiers. Even better, it is extremely picturesque, thanks to a lovely location along the dramatic River Dranse, and its northerly location (only an hour or so from Geneva) makes it great for short transfers and self-drive trips. Perhaps the only drawback is the size of the place. As it follows a valley, Morzine's perpetual growth means that if you're staying at the far end of town you'll probably have to catch a bus to get to the lifts. Some might also find the centre, which in some respects resembles a boozy summer resort rather than a pretty Alpine town, something of a turn-off. But really, this comes with the territory when you're dealing with a resort of this size and the pros here definitely outweigh the cons.
