Niseko
Japan’s flagship resort has a strong Antipodean influence and is the closest the country has to a ‘western’ resort. Bottomless snow and the ubiquitous Japanese night skiing make it a unique experience.
Niseko resort is divided into four broad areas: Grand Hirafu, Higashiyama, Annupuri and Hanazono. The village itself is also called Hirafu, but collectively everybody refers to the entire settlement as Niseko. The resort is overshadowed by the majestic Yotei-san volcano, and you';; be surprised to hear that intrepid locals regularly hike and ski down its flanks. Niseko itself has no real fixed centre, meaning that the resort has something of a hotch-potch feel. Despite that, the bars and restaurants in town tend to be unique – often little more than a simple shed or garage turned into a basic pub - and add to the unique atmosphere of the place.
