The ancient Roman city of Aosta is buzzing with life and character - there are numerous restored Roman monuments. The lift to Pila, the ski area, is right next to the train station and takes you up 1200m in under 18 minutes.
Aosta is the regional capital and the centre of cultural life in the valley. Although at first sight an ordinary Italian town, it has a strong cultural and historical heritage as well as plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and sporting activities to explore. Stay here and use it as a base to ski Pila.
