Ski Resort Guide: Chamonix

Chamonix: Intro

Arguably the best (expert) ski resort in the world, with epic off-piste, awe-inspiring scenery and a brilliant party scene. If only we had a private helicopter to commute between the mountains...

Chamonix is a large yet attractive town incorporating several satellite villages along a 12km-long glacial valley. It has a long mountaineering history thanks to its location at the base of Mont Blanc and its bars buzz with happy, modern-day mountain-lovers from 1600 onwards. Yes, there's a Chanel shop but don't expect glamour - locals and regular visitors wear climbing harnesses and carry ABS rucksacks, and there's accommodation and dining to suit all budgets.
Pros
  • Some of the world's steepest, most challenging and most scenic skiing.
  • Accommodation to suit all budgets.
  • Rocking nightlife.
  • Easy to reach from Geneva.
Cons
  • Skiing is spread across five separate mountains - prepare to commute.
  • Not ideal for beginners or intermediates.
  • The mountain gets tracked out quicker than you can say 'powder'.
  • You have to pay for the second stage of the Grands Montets cable car.
