Ski Resort Guide: Andermatt

Andermatt: Intro

A simple mountain town loved by adventurous families and extreme skiers for its epic freeriding.

Andermatt is a small town wedged high in the Swiss mountains where the Swiss army carries out its winter training. A small river flows through the heart of the village, which consists of one main street dotted with hotels and bars leading up the Gemstock cable car. Andermatt has long been popular with hardcore skiers yet remains relatively unknown as an international resort. However, that's about to change: construction of a luxury resort complete with seven hotels and golf course is scheduled to start in 2009 on the outskirts of the village. The project will transform Andermatt - a change welcomed more by locals than regular visitors.
Pros
  • Excellent for expert skiers in search of steep, deep powder that's uncrowded in comparison to St Anton, Engelberg and Chamonix.
  • The town has a charming, unspoiled atmosphere (pre-development).
Cons
  • Can get busy at weekends with day visitors from Zürich.
  • Limited activities for bad-light days.
  • Uncertainty about the future nature of the resort in light of major development.
