Hintertux
Hintertux: reviews
- Steve Lambert (30 November 2009)
Just got back from a long weekend in Hintertux. Plenty of snow and despite it seeming busy the lifts coped very well with minimal queues. A good venue for early season skiing accessible via easy driving with plenty of accommodation. Not sure I would go there for more then 3/4 days but when you need to go high early/late in the season it's well worth a visit. Not great for beginners as the blue runs on the glacier are only really accessible via reds. Good fast cable cars all the way up but you'll spend more time on T-bars than chairlifts after that.

Have visited Hintertux 3 times now for early and late season skiing and will be back for more. Plenty of accommodation to suit all pockets down the valley, good ski / shuttle bus services and a large car park at the base area. Be aware that when snow is poor in the lower Zillertal resorts the road can get very congested as people try to reach the Tux glacier. Police do close the road and get people onto buses to avaoid log jams. Skiing is normally excellent. Have had superb powder in Oct, Nov, and May with skiing down to Sommerbergalm on all occasions. In early Nov I've manged to ski all the way down to Hintertux village at 1500m. It is one of the best glaciers in Europe for the mixture of terrain that is available from wide gentle slopes to steeper more testing stuff. Off piste is good but be prepared with transceivers, probes and shovels. Ski with a guide if in doubt as there are plenty of big slots under the top layers of snow. Mountain restaurants are mostly big but the quality, choice range of food and value for money have been superb. They have non smoking areas too. There is a small mountain hut at the top of the glacier. They can get crowded especially in foul weather. As with any high area it gets cold and is exposed. Lifts are generally efficient with T bars on the glacier which may put some people off. There is an excellent terrain park on the glacier. Skis can be hired at the base station including modern telemark kit. They can also be hired further up the mountain as well. They also allow you to deposit your own skis overnight for a modest charge.

Just got back from Hintertux yesterday and i must say the best skiing i ever had. I was settled in Vorderlanersbach in the Sonne hotel. The Hintertux glacier is a beautiful mountain with lots of tracks for advanced skiers. The sight and seenery at 3250m are awsome and if you need to take a break there are wonderful restaurants on the tracks with great food. But i would also like to mention that with the Zillertal ski pass you get access to 600km of piste. So every day we ski different slopes so there's no way you can get bored. It's definetely a must see and worth every penny.

We skied as a family in October half term and the skiing was great. Perfect snow in the top 3/4 of the pistes. Snow park had big jumps and perfectly groomed. No skiing available below the 2rd lift station but loads above. We stayed in Lanersback down the valley which was quiet but friendly. The ski bus in the afternoons was crowded so it is worth skiing until the lifts close and having a beer before going home. We certainly will be going back.

Just returned from a week in Hintertux staying at the Der Rindererhof Hotel. Went to the Glacier every day and in the morning the skiing was excellent. Lovely unspoilt resort with excellent facilities. Ski hire at the top of the lifts so no lugging skis around and lift pass was included in the hotel package. Thoroughly recommend the resort and the hotel.
