Les Deux Alpes: reviews
- skiclub.co.uk visitor (17 March 2010)
This was our first proper skiing holiday and we enjoyed every minute of it.
The weather was fantastic all week with plenty of sunshine most days with some good snow to ski on.
Had 3 hours per day intermediate lessons with ESF which were very good to say the least. Had a good instructor. I did hear a story that ESF could be a bit hit and miss with instructor quality but we definitely couldn't complain.
Plenty of slopes to keep us entertained for the week and there were no big queues at any of the lifts, not even at the weekends. Some very good blues and reds to contend with from the glacier all the way down to Les Cretes. After that to get to the resort you have to take a black or a long and boring narrow green.
The only down side to 2 Alpes is that all the greens are very narrow and can get quite busy at the end of the day. Saw two big crashes on the last day both requiring paramedics, but don't let that put you off.
Was quite pricey to eat and drink on the slopes, but Le Pano Bar at Toura had happy hour from 3-4pm with a live DJ from 3-5pm. Awesome! La Fee was quite reasonable for food and drink at lunchtime but can get quite busy so be patient to get served!
We stayed at Maeva Apartments which was ok but quite basic. A bit noisy in the early hours due to a football bar being right under our apartment, but it served it's purpose.
All in all, a great resort and worth checking it out. We would go again without doubt. This is the opinion of a skiclub.co.uk visitor, not the Ski Club of Great Britain. - skiclub.co.uk visitor (15 March 2010)
Went to 2 Alpes on 6th March, weather and snow conditions were amazing. With brilliant sunshine pretty much all week and snow in the evenings. It was very cold at the top of the mountain but warm enough to sit outside for lunch. The mountain is quick to ski and lots of nice blues for beginners, not much to challenge the more advanced piste skier but plenty to do on the snow park or on the border cross circuits.
Went with Crystal and stayed in the Club Hotel Brunerie which was not great, the building and fixtures are all very dated and nothing seems to work - the staff are however excellent. There is a ski guiding service with either the reps or the hosts. Eating and drinking on the mountain is very expensive €7.50 for large beer! Also toilets are not great. This is the opinion of a skiclub.co.uk visitor, not the Ski Club of Great Britain. - skiclub.co.uk visitor (26 February 2010)
I went to this resort in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and am going again this March. Went with Crystal in 2006 and stayed at La Meije - catered chalet, great place, good food, and good reps. In 2007 rented a private apartment in Venosc (down the other side of the mountain). It's a bit out of the way although there is a gondola up, but it is then a trek to the lifts. Stayed in a hotel in 2008 right next to the main square (Belhambra, I think). Wonderful buffet dinners.
Smokey Joe's is a great place to eat with good atmosphere. We went to all the trouble of speaking in French, only to be answered in English - c'est la vie! The mountain is great for beginners because it has a reverse gradient. You get to ski/board right at the top which beginners don't necessarily get to do. As a beginner skier or an unsure boarder, you can't go all the way to the bottom, but a gondola ride down can be quite welcome after a long hard day's riding. This is the opinion of a skiclub.co.uk visitor, not the Ski Club of Great Britain. - Malcolm Turner (22 June 2009)
My first time in Les Deux Alpes and my first experience of summer skiing! I stayed at the Mercure which was comfortable and good value for money. My only criticism of the hotel is that it is a long way from the Jandri Express (the only lift which you can use in summer), and if I hadn't had a car it would have been a difficult journey.
For summer skiing you take two cable cars to reach the glacier, which takes about 30 minutes, then there is a railway which takes you to the highest pistes. Once up there the skiing is pretty good with plenty of long, wide blue runs. They're not too difficult but reasonably fast. I am an intermediate skier and the pistes were fine for me. A more experienced skier might find them a little tame though, there are no black runs in summer, and only one red. Queues at some of the lifts can be long and they are mostly drag lifts with few chairs - this can be tiring.
If you've not been summer skiing before there are a few things you should know. Sun block and eye protection are absolutely essential! I got very burnt on the first day. You also need to know that the lifts open at 7am and close at noon. By 11am the snow is becoming slushy and by lunchtime it's more or less unskiable.
Les Deux Alpes is purpose built and lacks character, but there are some good restaurants and bars. I especially recomend the Blue Salmon for good food and friendly service.

Just spent xmas and new year in 2alps. Had a fabulous time staying at Anne Millet's chalet. Had a block of lessons with Anne (ex French Slalom racer) and independent instructor and have never had such a fantastic time. Anne had four of us soggy forty somethings beginning to carve on our edges with grins like cheshire cats and my four year old skiing backwards and forwards on the same run - this made my holiday. My son now clamors to go back and ski with Anne.....he has the bug! The chalet was great (almost ski in and out) and we were very well looked after. The pisteurs were very kind and helpful getting my son on and off lifts. By the end of the two weeks I enjoyed skiing down the black into the village. Take a lock with you though as my skiis were stolen at the mountain restaraunt.at Le Cret,

Just returned from a week's skiing in Deux Alps. Travelled with Ski World and stayed at Le Cret. Both tour company and hotel were great. The hotel was clean and very friendly with excellent food. Vicky, the manager, was efficient, helpful and extremely professional and the rest of the staff were great too. Le Cret is very central, but can be noisy due to its position opposite the Polar Bear. I was a little disappointed with the Apres ski - it was certainly a lot less lively than other resorts I've skied in, and there were few places to entertain those of us over the age of 30!!!
The skiing was good for intermediates, but I would not recommend this resort to beginners as, apart from the glacier, there were few runs suitable for novices. The blues were very challenging and closer to reds in other resorts. The GREEN (yes apparently) to the village was a nightmare to ski down - narrow, icy, bumpy, overcrowded and with sheer drops off the edge. I saw more people waiting for assistance on this run than any other.
After reading some less than favourable reviews on this resort I was pleasantly surprised. It is a resort I would definitely recommend to intermediate skiers - and finally thanks to Alex, our Ski World ski guide, who gave us 2 very enjoyable days.

Just back from a week of skiing in Les Deux Alps.
The skiing was great, one heavy snow fall early on set us up for a fantastic weeks skiing. The lift system is very good with virtually no queues and the pistes were well prepared and generally not crowded.
The main gripe is that piste classification system is very poor, with a marked tendency to understate difficulty. This is not a beginners resort, with the seeming large numbers of blues being very misleading; most would be red elsewhere. The only runs down to the village are either a long, icy and narrow green piste, which was positively dangerous at the end of the day due to overcrowding and the sheer drop off the side, or an excellent black run.Another point is that the ski area is not too big, we'd covered most of the resort by the second day. That said, there were enough excellent pistes that merited multiple revisits.
The nightlife did not live up to the hype, but maybe during a busier week there might be more atmosphere.
Les Deux Alps is a great place for intermediate skiiers. It is too inconvenient for beginners and probably not extensive enough for experts. For skiers with a few weeks experience, I would highly recommend it.

Just got back from a weeks holiday staying in Les Deux Alpes at Club Hotel La Brunerie. We were a group of 7 including 2 children under 10. Contrary to many reports I had read prior to our holiday, La Brunerie was an outstanding place to stay, the rooms although a little basic, were perfectly adequate and the amazing food more than made up for what the rooms lacked. The staff were delightful and really helpful and friendly too. The resort was lovely, and snow conditions fantastic all week. There was no real waiting for any lifts and the electronic lift passes were ingenious. The glacier was great and fairly quiet and at 0 degrees was quite warm! Recommended as a great family resort (if you can avoid the doggy doos along the street!!!) If you want a great place to eat try La Patate.

Just got back from Les Deux Alpes on the 26/1/08.
Conditions perfect, one day of snow which kept the snow conditions topped up.
We stayed at the Le Flocon d'Or apartments, only two of us so plenty of room. Best quality and size appartments we have stayed in for years. Quite a trek back up the hill if you miss the shuttle bus which stops at 8pm! They really need to provide a shop and bar facilities. Really was ski in and out.
As usual got conned by the rep to hire ski's from their recommended hire shop which was in the town when there was a ski shop outside our apartment block. Having said that they were the best ski's I have hired.
Good choice of bars and restaurants, some did have reasonable prices for a change.
Le Grave was not open till the 25th so missed out on that experience.
We will probably go back next year.

Just got back from a week in Les Deux Alps (26/1/08) with ten mates. The resort was fantastic, skiing was great, snow conditions couldn't have been better even with the warm weather. The lift system was fast and efficient with minimal queues. Stayed at Les Cret in the town centre with Skiworld. The location was perfect, hotel basic but clean, the food was a bit of a surprise, great food, the staff and the manager were also great. Would recommend.
An absolute must is the day away trip to Serre Chevalier an amazing resort with fantastic skiing, only 30 euros for the coach which picked us up outside Le Cret, with skiing covered on the Deux Alps pass.
Six nights out in the town until between 2 - 3pm enjoying the night life, always busy, best bars Polar Bear, Smithys & Secrets, the night club L'Avalanche was ramed and noisy but dirty, if your out of it who cares if not stay away. Will be going back!

Just back from Les Deux Alps – We were there for Christmas with our three adult children. Not as bad as we expected it to be from reading other reviews.
The snow was great but we found that we spent a lot of time going from the bottom to the top. One of our group wasn't as good at skiing as the rest of us and she found that the winding green run back to the resort in the evenings was a tough task - full of snow-plowers and fallen bodies who were very hard to overtake. We came down on the black run instead and found that much easier, even for our novice.
We stayed in Le Flocon D'Or high up on the far side of the resort and it was a great location for skiing as we could come out the door in the morning on to the slopes. Our side of the mountain was much quieter with some fine runs to warm up on before going across to the other side. We never had to the take the bus (yippie!) as we could ski home too. We had two apartments so from that point of view the accommodation was good maybe a little bit cramped for 4 though. The hotel is not well positioned if you want to go out at night. The bus stops at 8pm so if we went out we had to climb 346 steep steps. Not great for digesting the dinner!!! No sign of taxis anywhere.
"Crepes a go go" very good for food.
We found the French people much friendlier than in any other resort in France that we've been to .
The outdoor heated swimming pool in the middle of the town (free with the lift pass) was great for our tired muscles in the afternoon. I would return again but would stay "on the flat" for going out at night.

Skied here Jan 2005. Great slopes, but very rocky in places, had to change ski's twice during week due to wear and tear. Characterless village very sprawled out, very cold, little snow the week we were there, but pisteurs made good use of stock piles assembled the previous weeks!!! Very efficient lift system, and great 8 man chair!!! Very quiet night life, bars lack any charm, as do most of the bar staff. Probably wouldn't go back, skiing B+ the rest C-.

Only there for a day visit on the Alpe d'Huez lift pass.
I'd heard a lot of good things about the resort so was looking forward to the days skiing.
A bit of a queue to get upto the main area but nothing outrageous. We went straight to the top of the glacier. Only did one run of it, don't know which one because it was bloody freezing (-20 without wind chill!) and visability was v. poor.
Snow conditions were very good and pistes were well maintained. As some one else as said not particularly well laid out with a fair bit of poling/walking involved in some parts. Didn't find the pisted runs that extensive, to be quite honest I was dissapointed. What I did like was there was lots of skiiable area between pisted runs, below lifts etcs that was very enjoyable and meant you could practice your off piste technique in sight of a lift.
The 2 two blacks back down to the lower slopes whilst a little steep for some were in reasonable condition, i.e. no bare patches. Quite a lot of the snow boarders attempting them just ended up slipping down them and polishing the run to ice in patches.
All in all a very enjoyable days skiing - apart from the cold. I think a competent skiier could ski the pisted runs of the resort in 2 days max and I'm not certain how many of the runs are interesting enough to ski more than once or twice.
Don't think I'll be going there for a weeks holiday although there are several neigbouring resorts on the lift pass that are worth a days outing.

My first experience of european skiing as i have always been on trips over to the states. I had read various reviews of Les2Alpes but i was not disappointed and turned out to be one of the best weeks skiing i've ever had!
I was a little concerned over reports of long waiting times for the lifts but never had a problem and are quicker than american lift queues. Runs were well groomed and provided various levels of difficulty. Runs were well signed not as previously suggested in another review.
We took a few beginners with us this year and they had a few lessons which they found excellent and instructors very helpful and were able to join us on the glacier for the rest of the week. Apres ski was good and the chalet was first class.
Can really recommend it as a resort!

Had a great trip to Les Deux Alpes. Stayed in Mark Warner's La Berangere, which is ideal for families. Good resort for skiers and impressed with the snowboard park. Visit the ice caves at the very top of the glacier train - superb!!! Not easy for beginner-intermediates to ski from higher up the mountain back into the resort. There's either a long narrow windy green or a black, which is not ideal. I found the pistes very well maintained and was impressed with the resorts organisation.

Just returned last weekend, 04th March 2006. Must admit Les Deux Alpes is a little disappointing, especially after the reputation that precedes it. We stayed at the Residence du Soleil, the apartments up on the smaller alp, accessed by about 6 flights of stairs, not bad on the way down, but can be tough on the way up – especially after a skin full. Wouldn’t bother in ski boots either. There is a regular ski bus to resort centre, but we found the steps quicker. The apartments themselves were tiny, absolutely NO mod cons. Bare mattresses, no towels, no tv, no maid service, and no cleaning products, Basically, basic! We had to make up our own beds with sheets left in the cupboard, but you can hire a room cleaning service – if you want to blow half your budget? Nice and warm though and great views out over the village and mountains opposite. One saving grace is that you can ski in and out of the complex; as long as you remember to leave plenty of time to ski all the way back from the glacier. The skiing is OK, particularly liked the ‘boadercross’ run and there are lots of jumps and ramps knocking about. We had some great snow which made the black runs great fun later on with all the bumps that had developed, there is also a long red on the smaller side that runs quite low down (serviced by an old 2 man chair) which is twice as difficult as any of the blacks anywhere else in the resort, so be warned. I’d say the whole area is pretty easy to complete in two days. There are too many flat, push along tracks linking runs for my liking and runs to resort tended to be way too busy. We suffered some bad weather, very cold, windy and foggy which made visibility difficult, especially on fresh snow, but when the sun did come out it was quality. Unfortunately for me, the après ski, in its real term, is not that good, its ok in a couple of bars ’yeti‘ is ok and ‘the secret’ has live music etc but neither are traditional enough – good savings to be made in happy though, which we took full advantage of because beer is a rip off! Most of the nightlife kicks off at around 10pm and finishes at around 2am. The avalanche club is open later but its bobbins, it’s about the size of my back yard (which is a small back yard) and they try charging you 15 euros to get in! (tip, don’t pay – walk in, when they ask for money, look angry and go to walk out, most times they say ‘ok ok you go free tonight’) ‘the secret’ bar is good at night as well as tea time, also try ‘polar bear’, ‘wyndsor’ then go to ‘smithy’s’ later on. None are anything special but this seemed to be the best sequence. They do a good pint of Guinness in most bars although it is 6 euro a pint, an average round of four pints and four sambuca’s cost around 35 euro, 20 euro without the sambuca – but we found the more you buy, the more free drinks you get, so it pays to stay in places longer and get your faces known. All in all a good week, but wont be returning in a hurry.

December 2005 Risked a trip before Xmas and were not disappointed. There had been shedloads of snow for two weeks before and the pistes were in great condition. A couple were showing a few stones where they were exposed to winds but generally the piste bashers worked hard with the existing snow and that made by their many cannons. We are 4 of different abilities but still managed to have fun together, especially at the very top of the glacier where some of the blues are very kind! Disagree with the member who said the signs were confusing. We found it all very clear (maybe they have improved it since he went). Stayed in the very comfortable and spacious Alpina Lodge just 50 metres from a chair which whisked us up to the Cretes. NO queuing all week ANYWHERE, lifts or even at lunchtime at the Patache or the Glacier restaurants where the service was surprisingly friendly and extremely efficient. Very cheerful service and helpful information from Les2 Alpes Voyages girls and from Sport2000 who sorted out our skis and boots. We are back for another play before the end of the season. Be interesting to compare conditions.

Have just been to Deux Alpes for the first time with 7 Uni mates - had an awesome time. Can definately see why this resort has been branded the Las Vegas of ski-ing; there were loads of bars and clubs to be experienced although the prices are atrocious - 5 euros a beer and 15 euros to get into the main club there, Avalanche, which isn't all that great. Tip: pretend to be a resort rep's girlfriend/boyfriend and the bouncers let you in free no problem: worked each time for me ha ha. If you are on a night out go for the drum and bass night at Smokey Joes or to play fooseball at Smithys, both cool bars. Alternatively you could visit this crazy souvenier shop opposite Yeti bar that sells weapons next to furry singing Marmotts - the guys in my group almost wept when they saw the big-assed fireworks collections in there. The guys on the balcony opposite almost wept too when they saw the rockets and bangers flying through their windows - we're sorry guys, it really was an accident. For such a low-lying resort the ski-ing conditions were pretty good - mostly light and powdery top snow although after 6 days of no snow the ice was beginning to come through quite badly on the lower black runs. I was a bit dubious of the runs before I went as piste maps make the resort seem geared to beginniers, but don't worry if you are thinking in the same - they really aren't. Lots of the blues could have been classed as reds etc, and theres lots of off-piste if you feel lively. For the first day we got stuck on the middle of the mountain which was was a bit rubbish as all the runs are green or black - go right up to the glacier though and you can cain out massive blue and red runs all day. A great resort for big carvers but not for those wanting scenery - there were no scenic woodland runs which was a little disappointing. On the other hand, when you're hurtlng down a smooth powdered 100ft wide red carving up the best turns you've ever done in your life with your new Fischer RC's and Pendulem blaring out of your iPod then who really cares.

This will be my 3rd year on the trot to Les 2 Alpes. Great place. Excellent for snowboarders, my two teenage boys snowboard and love it. Great fun to chill out and watch the loonies doing jumps at the snowboard park when you need a rest. Will be my 3rd stay at the local youth hostel.Very french, great grub, made to feel very welcome. Good evenings in bar and at £350 full board including ski`s and lift pass you cant possibly do it cheaper.(shouldnt really be letting you into that little secret) p.s. dont make the black run back to the village when you are tired coz you`ll slide the whole way down on your arse minus your skis and poles like i did if you go over!!

Just back from a week in 2 Alpes. Reading other feedback I felt I had to comment. It seems most people can find fault in anything whereas in our view this is an outstanding resort - the glacier offers guaranteed skiing. We may have had one queue longer than 5 mins the whole week (covering the entire mountain). The variety is excellent depending on whether you want a cruisey day or a full on day. The ESF was outstanding for the 4 and 6 yr old kids. The resort layout is not a problem at all, even for my wife who isn't the best navigator on the road at the best of times. People complaining about having to pole in the middle forget one thing, you only need to pole once, after that you have learned to keep your speed up before the flat sections - quite simple really If you don't like the steep blacks home or the narrow icy paths as alternatives, take a lift down. You can sit down and enjoy a fantastic view. If you want to find fault, then the town isn't the most charming in France but there are far worse.

Went there over Christmas. The resort was quiet, very French and friendly!, skiable to the doorstep and hads great facilities. Don't go early season for off piste due to the amount of stones in this ski area!

This was my sixth season, and sixth resort, and I have to report that Les Deux Alpes has to be the most confusing Ski area I have yet visited ! Routes are marked not by piste name or number but by the name of a lift in that general direction. ( Which you then need to decipher from a table on the map...) Furthermore, gradings on the ground have changed from the map gradings, and features, such as a large snowpark area on top of the Glacier, are not even shown on the latest 2005 maps. I also picked up from one Rep in the resort, that the gradings, in his opinion, are at the top end of the range - ie some of the reds are borderline blacks, some of the blues are borderline reds etc. To an intermediate skier this can present quite a challenge ! Perhaps this is done deliberately so as to not put off the vast majority of intermediates looking for favourable resorts ? Finally, I would make the point that these views were shared by many other skiers I met on the lifts etc, so I know I am not alone !

I've just returned from a week at 2 Alpes and have had a great time. The blacks are great but Super Diable and Diable down to the town seem to go on for ever - Don't make them your last run of the day! The beginners really enjoyed it because there are blue runs all over the place- they do not hug the village. The only slight moan is the number of shallow runways - none of us are fans of poling! I'd recommend it for a mixed group.

I just spent a great week in this resort! I can recommend this skiing area to all, both beginners and advanced skiers. The four black runs going down to the village are a great challenge to the daredevisl amongst us, especially the little used "Y" run, which commands an excellent view over the village! (I'm still sweating when I think back on that one...) The only downside is the poor nightlife and apres-ski. However, that may be due to the week I went, because there are enough bars in town... I ould rate it 7.5 on a scale of 10.

Les 2 Alpes was my first ski holiday back in 2000. I am going there again in 2004. Contrary to some reports I found Les 2 Alpes excellent for learning. The many nursary slopes at the bottom were fantastic for getting your confidence. There is also a great variety of nursery slopes (very shallow to quite steep)so it was possible to learn and progress at your own speed. I found the ESF very good as well.

We had the best-ever skiing in Europe in Les Deux Alpes in March 2002. Snow conditions were excellent with no ice at all - largely thanks to the altitude. The absence of snow in the town gave queueing problems on the lifts and the layout of the pistes is rather linear which doesn't help. Nevertheless I would highly recommend 2 Alpes for intermediates in particular as most of the resort area is blue/red which, together with the Colorado snow quality is a great confidence builder!

Great skiing on all parts of the mountain, the glacier can be pretty windy. The long blue runs mean a bit of trudging as you often can't see the flat parts until you get to them, therefore lack of momentum. The run from the top of Diable to the village is excellent. The green runs up the mountain are incredibly busy every day and the queues are long. It takes a long time to get up the mountain in the morning e.g. you queue up for the Jandri express at 9:00 you will be lucky to get to the top and start skiing by 9:50. The slopes round the village deteriorate quickly into slush and wet(or Ice).

This was my first holiday back in 2001. Instead of saying how great the snow was I'd thought I would direct folks to "l'table" restaurant for amazing Italian food (2 large pizzas and 2 beers came to £15!!) and to Mikes Bar for ya drinking. They even wax ya board whilst you drink! Les deux alpes..... great place! Great great great place!!!!
