Morzine: reviews

  • skiclub.co.uk visitor (01 February 2010)

Had an awesome few days in Morzine mid Jan, conditions have never let me down and its my fourth time there. Just top cruising all the way to Switzerland and Mont Chery is almost like having your own mountain for the day it's so quiet. Big shout to treeline chalets, great hospitality and it was never too much trouble! Morzine and PDS for 1st class skiing, 1st class lifts, 1st class terrain and 1st class drinking! In fact, beats 3V into 2nd place by my reckoning.

  • Nathalie Theyers (17 March 2008)

Lovely typically french town with real character and great shops, restaurants and little french hotels. Ski area is extensive but can be limited by poor weather- watch out for the rain! Rain in Morzine often means fresh pow in Avoriaz, so definitely worth venturing out. when conditions are good head for the infamous Swiss Wall and surrounding off piste then get into the Swiss area for perfect slopes and a long scenic cruise to grand paradis lift. Slopes can be busy, but the lift system is very efficient except at peak times or when the lifties decide to strike!

Will definitely go again, provided global warming doesn't wipe put the snow all together.

Morzine is very pretty and the hotel Les Airelles has good food and is spotlessly clean and warm.

Only one green run for beginners at the top of Le Plienney lift , some very fast skiers careering through beginners who should know better. British Instructors at Ready2ride were brilliant. Second week in March is French school holiday so HUNDREDS of littlies about . If you are a beginner you get the "joy" of looking after them on the lifts....they're so small they might fall out! I had hold of them by the scruff. Would return, lovely lively resort especially if there's snow in the village.

We stayed at le viking crystal hotel from Jan19/08. The week was fantastic with excellent snow, sun and a great hotel. Don;t be put off by any negative reports you may have read previously about this hotel they seen to have resolved any issues. If you have young children this is a fantastic location.

Stayed at Chalet Eira in January 2007 with Eskimogul, we had been there before but its much better now , better food and service - even the snow was good despite all reports to the contrary - I have a young family so it was great to have the nanny service come to the chalet - Highly recommended

Morzine is a sweet town with a real community, unlike many resorts, and a lovely atmosphere. If the snow is good, I think the Portes du Soleil beat anywhere.

Just back from 5 fabulous days in Morzine. I agree does not matter about lack of snow in village as access is easy and the ski area is brilliant. Have to comment on Morzinelets.com , brilliant company run by John and his team, they could not do enough for us, stayed at Les Rhodos, brilliant little friendly budget hotel, well located next to bus stop. Will definitely be going back next year and using same company.

Five fantastic days in Portes du Soleil. Easiest access via the Ardent route straight to the Swiss border. After four inches of dusting on the first night the conditions up top made us squeal. Lovely reds and blues and I can confirm that the view from the to of the Abricotine piste to the Swiss Alps and the Dents Blanches was awesome. I must however recommend very highly our hotel the Legrand Tetras. This place is spotless, cheap - half board was, well I`m not telling as there won`t be room for us next time - foods great, and Cyril the owner and manager was a great host, even to a hybrid group of twelve Welsh, English and Scots blokes on a rugby international match weekend. I`ll be back for the family trip as well. Don`t worry about the lack of snow in Morzine itself as there`ll be plenty on the top. We`ll be back again to search out and enjoy the rest of the huge Portes du Soleil area next year.

Just back from Morzine after a long weekend. Very lucky to have heavy snowfall on the day of our arrival and fab sunshine thereafter. The resort does suffer from the fact that it is rather low down but so long as you are willing to head up Super Morzine and go high, the conditions were fabulous.

Feel I have to mention our accomodation in Hotel le Tremplin right at the bottom of the Pleney lift. It really was a pleasure to stay there. The owners have very little English but more than make up for it with their enthusiastic welcome. Breakfast is fab with amazing coffee and fab croissants, meats, cheeses etc. We were B&B but I was told the restaurant at night is equally good. They also delivered soup ( free of charge ) to one of our number who was poorly one night. Overall couldn't recommend them more!!

Just back from 3 days skiing in Morzine with 5 lads. No snow in morzine but plenty in Avoriaz which was easily accessed on snow from Morzine - 30 mins approx. Enormous skiing area in Avoriaz with Switzerland easily accessible. Plenty of mountain restuarants. Morzine excellent base only 1 hour form Geneva. Stayed in Le Dents Blanches chalet - good food . Extremely well looked after by our hosts - Maggy who came up with us the first morning to show us around Avoriaz, and Mike who collected us from the airport & brought us to the ski shop when we arrived - we would highly recommend Les dent Blanches as a superb base.

Just had a great week in Morzine - shame about the rain lower down, but plenty of snow at the top of the Pleney gondola. Lovely village with lively bars (try the Coyote, the Buddah ,or the Irish bars) Plenty of places to eat and a supermarket for the self caterers. We stayed at the Bel'Alpe hotel, ideally situated 250 metres from the Pleney gondola and close to the village centre. Only five minutes walk ( in ski boots ) from the Caribou ski hire shop. Getting gear was straightforward, but the shop was busy at peak times. My wife needed to change her boots on the second day. This was no problem and we elected to take a boot upgrade for a one-off cost of Five euros. The hotel was welcoming and cosy, the staff polite and helpful and the food was excellent . Although a fixed four course menu, it was first class every evening (chocolate pudding to die for !) We had both skiied before, but took skischool lessons to brush up on the basics. The ESF skischool was well organised and the level of instruction was very good . Our instructor Claude spoke very good English and we had a seven person, all Brit group. The local ski area has several easy blue runs, and a very easy green for the total beginners. We had a good time despite the weather. It was skiable every day and we had a lot of fun . Exchanged my skis for a dead sexy bright yellow set of snowblades (3 euros extra) on our last day and they were a lot of fun. Would we go there again? You bet we would !

Morzine and indeed,Portes du Soleil, is greatest resort I have been too yet. I have been to Grand Massif area and Les Deux Alpes, but this is even better. If you have a ski host who will drop you off at different lifts you can try lots of different areas out, though in most cases you can ski from one area to another.

The blue runs are great, with some easy red runs for intermediates. Great Views from very top near Abricotine ski run. The Ardent ski lift is least busy if you want to avoid queues and there is a fantastic blue run at the top of this - the nice and wide "Prolay." Les Gets area has some very (very) gentle blue runs which we used towards end of holiday when legs too tired to ski properly!

  • Ann Balmforth (26 February 2007)

An excellent resort for families as it has easy access to the slopes, lots of shops and additional entertainment, such as ice hockey matches, a cinema, & ice skating. We had lessons with the British Alpine Ski School which were excellent and as they were on alternate days we had time to practice the new techniques. Even though it was sunny & we did not have snow during the week, the "pisteurs" kept the pistes in very good "spring" condition. We stayed at the Hotel Alpina (across the suspension footbridge), which was clean, efficiently run with good food, and flexible enough to allow us to attend an Ice Hockey match one evening.

Great ski area when the conditions are good. Unfortunately in this time of climate change, mild weather ruins some of the skiing, and this seems to be happening more and more often at the lower resorts. In both my last visits we have encountered rain and very mild temperatures, as have various friends, and this happens not just either end of the season but mid season as well!! As a resort it is spot on, easy to get to, plenty of good shops/restaurants, friendly people, good ski instruction and great skiing in the right conditions. All in all, Morzine would be one of the best resorts in the world if it was 1000m higher.

A large group of us travelled together (44) all families, we stayed at Le Viking which is ski-in/ski-out. There was no snow for the first few days which meant travelling down the cable car to Morzine village and then by bus to Avoriaz. When you have 20 children it's no fun at all. However, the snow turned up eventually and we managed to ski right outside our hotel. The resort was great for all levels - we had a mixture of begineers, intermediates & experts but Morzine catered well for all of us. The Hotel was great, the children were safe and the were very liberal. We were supposed to pre-book the pyjama club which we didn't realise so missed out on that. Would thorougly recommend both the hotel and the resort (apart from the lack of snow) - should also mention Sophie and Olaf from the ski school - they were great!

  • Barbara Whitcombe (07 February 2007)

I stayed at the Viking Hotel in Morzine and it was not great. The location was great and it was the only one ski to door and the whizz kids was great, but the rest of the service was not that great.

Me, my wife and my family of two girls (10 and 12) have just returned from a week in Morzine on 6th Jan 2006. We stayed at the Hotel Chamois, run by Ski Chamois Ltd, which is at the top of the Nyon cable car on the Plateau De Nyon. There is only the hotel and a seperately owned, excellent, restaurant (which shuts at 5pm most days) on the plateau and once the cable car has shut (usually 5pm) you are pretty much stuck. Even when the cable is running you still have to catch a bus in to town (every 20 mins) to get to the shops. It took us 1.5 hrs to get to town and back when we needed some cough medicine. If the romantic idea of being in a hotel stuck up a mountain appeals, think carefully of the logistics.

The hotel, owned and run by Mike Harber, is basic, there are no rooms with ensuite WC's (in most rooms you get a shower and sink) and you have to share two loos in the corridor on each floor). Unfortuantely we would not go back but that is a personal opinion.

Despite there being no snow since 9/12/2006 we visited morzine on 27/12/06 until the 1/1/07 we achieved 4 days full skiing which was amazing considering the conditions, the skiing was a little icy but still exciting, you have to congratulate the piste keepers, they have done an excellent job, slightly better than easy jet who lost my bags for 3 days !!

Having just visited the skiclub website for snow report in Morzine, I was astonished to see two very negative reports for the hotel Le Viking. I stayed there with my family in april last year and I can say it was the best location we have stayed in in the past five years. The location is second to none as you can ski in and out of the door (no fighting for a space on the lift with the kids) you can come back at lunchtime (ideal when you have small children). The food was very good, we had two rooms with a connecting door, the rooms were clean but to be fair were in need of redecoration. I understand crystal have just taken over this hotel this year and plan a major refurb in the spring. We plan a return visit this year and I would recommend it to any people with young children. But remember it is halfway up the mountain if you want nightlife stay in the village

We visited Morzine in march 2006. The resort was in a fantastic state with really good snow conditions. My girlfriend and I really enjoyed the apres ski too !!! The Dixie bar and Budha seemed especialy good. Though on a moderate budget we did splash out on a helicopter trip, incredible views. We stayed at chalet Sherpa which was good value for money for the budget we had. Offering good food and clean, comfortable rooms. Lewis the ski rep excelled on the last day when I hurt my wrist. We are already getting a large team together for next years jaunt.

Would recommend Morzine as a great ski area and village but I recommend you stay at Hotel Le Viking if you have lots of young kids and enjoy holiday camp style accommodation.

We are fortunate to have our own apartment in Morzine and are about to go on our 5th ski this winter. It is a fantastic village, with lovley shops, friendly locals, a really good selection of restuarants and amazing skiing on the 650 km of runs in the Portes Du soleil. Try La Flamme restuarant by the Super Morzine lift, and La Chaudanne 5 mins walk for the tourist office along La Route de la Plagn, but always book in advance. If you wish more formal surroundings and a classy meal try the Samoyede hotel in the very centre. Beautiful food. Mountain biking in the summer and walking are superb along with a touch of sunbathing at the pool or Lake Montriond complete this year round resort! Love it!

We have just come back from a week in Morzine. Lovely resort, with fantastic skiing and great restaurants and bars. Our friends stayed at the Hotel Carlina which was superb and in just as good a position near the Pleney . L'Etale is a fabulous restaurant and I would also recommend Felix ski hire.

Spent 4 day weekend at Morzine at the end of Jan 06. An easy drive from Geneva airport (1h15mins by michelin guide) was key for a short break. We stayed at Hotel Le Tremplin, which has a stellar location next to the Pleney cable car, and helpful franglais speaking staff. Breakfast there was standard continental buffet. Snow conditions were good and the lovely wooded pistes between Morzine, Les Gets and the local peaks were very scenic, well covered and varied enough for strong intermediate riders, including off piste opportunities. My wife and I took a 2 hr double private snowboard lesson with the Ecole du Ski Francais which was excellent value and our instruction was of a high standard and in very good English. After skiing/boarding the Boudha Bar was cozy, and for dinner we recommend L'Auberge de la Combe a Zore (04 50 79 15 06) but try to book as it is extremely popular, with excellent grilled dishes. Overall an excellent ski/board short break locale.

  • David Eaves (08 January 2006)

Just returned from Christmas at Morzine, stayed at Les Gourmets, through Ski esprit. What a fabulous place/company!! Anyone travelling with children should seriously consider using them. Sensible childrens meals (proper food not nuggets and such rubbish) and mealtimes, and exclusive ski-school instructors meaning our improver 6 yr old was in a class of 4 (yes FOUR) for his weeks instruction. Provision of snow clubs and cocoa clubs gave us flexibility to do things as a family or if very cold to let him play indoors/do structured activities with other children. Sad to see that this property has not made it into next yrs preview brochure - apparently some contractural glitch. Very happy customers who would go back to Morzine for it's varied terrain, clear piste markings and 'villagey' atmosphere. PS skied over to Les Crosets in Switzerland, BEWARE one of the red runs under the telesiege des Mosettes has been re-graded black (and deservedly so in my opinion), but the piste map still shows it as red. We saw some very unhappy campers who were struggling as a result. Would certainly use Ski Esprit again.

A late entry for Christmas 2005, but definitely worth mentioning. My husband and I booked a late availability holiday to Chalet Symphony in Morzine. The hospitality, accomodation and catering were wonderful. Having never been away for Christmas before I was somewhat apprehensive, but the quality was second to none, and the Christmas dinner was even better than my Mum's!! The ski area is extensive and varied and the snow conditions were good. All in all a fantastic holiday with great hosts. I would recommend to anybody.

Stayed at Gourmet-Chalet.com company in a village just outside of Morzine and it was fabulous. Very peaceful and luxurious chalet and wonderful food and wine. They took us to whichever slopes looked the best and gave us mobile phones to phone in to ask for collection. Was much better than staying in town which we have found to be quite noisy in the past. Highly recommended as we were very spoilt by them.

We've been to Morzine in March now 3 years in a row and had a fantastic experience every time. The snow has always been great, despite it being the end of the season. We've stayed in Chalet Eira run by Alpine Tracks, and would recommend it to everyone- lovely people, great food & an excellent holiday altogether!

Hotel le Dahu is a charming alpine hotel with a welcoming and friendly staff. The food was great, including a selection of local cheeses every evening, but the quality service really made it special. Highly recommended!

  • William Hage (21 August 2003)

Morzine has the best all round attractions in the Alps. Close to Geneva airport. (My house to slopes in under 6hours, thank you Jet2 and Easyjet). Plenty of varied slopes from open cruising in Les Gets to serious mountain stuff on the Swiss border. Proper French village living in Morzine with reasonable bar prices and great nightlife. Good snow record (look at the historical reports) particularly when the other side of the Alps is brown. (Tignes/Duez/Meribel) Just don't book the school holidays or Xmas week and expect it to be quiet.

Morzine: Average Apres Ski; Fabulous skiing in Portes de Soliel. Appalling experience with ESI ski school. I received an incredibly rude response from them on sending them an email regarding our disappointment with the course we booked. They have absolutely no interest in customer service or satisfaction.

  • Venetia Rossdale (08 December 2002)

I have been going to Morzine for 17 years, and despite there not always being that much snow, it has always been a great holiday! I am 21 and so the night life is important, and although Morzine is not huge the few bars and clubs are a lot of fun - especially the Cavern! It's better than any other as its not too commercial and the prices are not as extortionate as other resorts (eg. Three Valleys!) I would recommend Morzine to everyone young, and old! It ROCKS!
