Soll: reviews

We've skied in Soll for the last 15 years or so, twice a year when we can manage it. Over this time, the lift system has vastly improved, very few drags and more and more flying sofa's, some with heated seats!
We always stay with Margaret, Theo, and Eva at the Mirabell, next door to Hotel Austria. Fantastic cakes and lovely friendly atmosphere for a more subdued apres ski. All the restaurants we use are very good, Dorf Stubb'n and the new Muhle are our favorites, but they are all good.
As for the skiing, fantastic, we are pretty good skiers and always come away wanting more because the area is so vast, now that Westendorf is lnked in with a new gondola instead of the bus. I've skied in many European resorts, but for us, Skiwelt beats them all.
We're going again on 5 March 10 for the second time this year, can hardly wait. We always fly to Munich from Heathrow and pick up a hire car, then about an hour and a half max drive to Soll, even when the roads are busy (Fri evening).
By the way, the best ski shop in Soll is Steinbacher Snow & Fun, go and chat with Martin and Stathis.

Just returned from one week in Soll, where I have not been for 11 years since I was a beginner. Not much had changed, only now I can actually really enjoy the vast ski area. We managed to ski almost the entire Ski Welt which is amazing. The village itself is small, with very few apres ski bars. The Salvenstadl was always busy and in the evenings most of the younger crowd would go to the Whiskey Muhel. Innsbruck airport not great - do not go through security until the last minute as there's not much on the other side. Also, flights are delayed often on departure as weather can stop landings.

Just got back from a week in Soll and thought I'd share my thoughts. As others have said the Ski Welt area is large and offers plenty of terrain for lower intermediate level skiers on the many red and blue pistes. Beginners and upper intermediate level skiers are far less well catered for and may want to consider other resorts. The piste map and signage are very poorly laid out so you spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to get around. The main gondola being located out of the village is a pain. Depending where you are in the village it's a good 15 to 20 minute walk or the crowded and rather infrequent buses. The other annoying thing is the buses stop running at the same time as the lifts so a last run up the gondola means walking back to the village. Final point, we found the Stoll hire shop half way between village and gondola to offer a very poor service. This appears to be the main hire outlet for the main tour operators. The facilities were extremely basic and the staff rude and unhelpful. By contrast Sport Edinger at the gondola station were excellent with exemplary customer service and facilities.

Just had three days in Soll & the SkiWelt with my wife. What a fantastic resort if you want miles of intermediate cruising with over 50 restaurants on the slopes. Snow was fantastic despite the resort being low and as other readers have said the lift system is one of the best I have come across - we only went on one tiny drag lift in three days ! Not the best for off piste and fairly limited if you want really tough blacks but for a relaxing time mid-season there aren't many better places.

I have skied in Soll regularly for over 16 years staying at the Postwirt hotel, which is excellent.
The Ski Welt area has one of the best lift systems anywhere (and I have skied many resorts in many countries) and the snow making is second to none. The snow making is being further developed all the time, however we have always had plenty of snow.
The total ski area is very large and I would recommend the Scheffau area if conditions in Soll aren't good. Make sure you ski over to Ellmau too and take the train back.
Top tip - don't wait for the ski bus to the slopes take a taxi if there are a few of you, it costs about 1.5 Euros each. No struggling with skis or fighting your way onto a bus.
Nightlife begins at the bottom of the home run. Try the Hexen Alm early on then ski down to the Salvenstaddle on the edge of town - this is the real home of Soll apres ski. There are live bands several times a week. The Stubai in the Postwirt hotel also has live bands two or three times a week, starting around 9pm.
Other good places to stay include the Gansleit hotel where in a good season you can ski back to the door. Overall, Soll and the Ski Welt is an intermmediate skiers dream.

This is the best holiday I have been on for a number of years, not once did I find myself looking for things to do. We stayed in the Hotel Tenne Garni which was situated in the heart of the village, and 5 mins walk from the slopes. I would certainly stay there again as it was very friendly the food was fantastic and we had a great night's sleep. Not a bad word to say about the place. We were first time skiers and found the ski school brilliant! 2 hours in the morning a glass of wine at lunch then hit the slopes for another 2 hours in the afternoon. By the end of the week even the worst of the group managed to tackle a red slope. The night life was perfect for us as we like a good live band which started for apres ski then continued into the night. Plenty of rep nights and instructor nights if you like a good bar crawl. We loved the resort so much that we are looking to go back as soon as possible!

I just returned from Soll. The conditions were excellent apart from the run back to the village at the end of the day, which proved difficult for beginners and early intermediates. Could it not be groomed at about 3 o'clock to allow skiers to get down safely?
Nightlife very average. Whisky Muhle top place in Soll? Don't think so.
Overall though a great place to go for a weeks skiing/boarding if the snow is good.

Travelled to Soll on Saturday 24th March. It had snowed for a few days in the proceeding week but that completely dispersed at ground level by Monday morning. The ski school that some of the party attended were therefore just about able to complete the initial day's beginners school before moving onto the lower slopes, which inturn gradually deteriorated throughout the week.
For the more competent skier/snowboarder the higher slopes weren't too bad, bit icy in the morning and slushy in the afternoon. However, as noted by another reviewer, Scheffau snow was much much better. Most days were therefore spent on the runs over that direction.
There were many great red runs which were very wide in places. There was plenty for the intermediate skier/snowboarder but the blue runs were restricted because of the lack of snow.
The area of Soll itself is beautiful. We stayed in a half board hotel (Ferienhotel Fuchs or Hotel Maria - it seems to go by both names) so didn't eat out other than 1 night which was very pleasant. Being end of season the area wasn't busy at all and some of the bars had shut. We weren't looking for heavy late nights so it catered for us.
The lack of enthusiasm for the 1 time we ate out stems from the amazing food served at the hotel. There was nothing wrong with the meal we ate out, it just wasn't any better then the inclusive menu we had at our disposal.
The hotel itself was excellent, very clean, friendly and accommodating. One point to note, don't be caught out at night without your room key. The front door is locked but so is the reception area. Whilst you may be able to gain access to the building by a friends key, you still can't enter the reception to get your room key and despite there being a sign telling you this, it wasn't that obvious and wasn't pointed out. Also on our occasion, the reception door was locked half hour before the sign said it would be so it all made for a testing situation! It was all resolved in the polite manner that the hotel staff conduct themselves in however.
All in all I would highly recommend this hotel. I think I will try for an earlier part of the season for next years trip, however, as it was a little warm for me. As for the snow, this season was bad so the fact we had some to use was a blessing. I will pay more attention to how high the resort is in the future, however, as the snow lasted no time at all with Soll being quite a low resort.

We went to Soll on 24 Feb 2006. Very little snow when we arrived but improved through the week. Snow conditions were much better in Sheffau, so skied there most days instead of Soll.
Ski instruction for the children in Soll was more like a ski guide than any helpful instruction so we were disappointed.
Stayed at the Feldwebel - comfortable rooms and nice food. I would highly recommend The Postwert across the road - very friendly and good food, wine and ice-cream!

Stayed in Soll the last week of January. When we got there there was no snow to speak of but the resort workers were doing there best. On the Monday the temp dropped and the snow cannons were switched on. This improved it slightly but come wed the real snow came and transformed the resort. The three mountains are connected well and give you some great skiing. The food on the mountain is very good also.
Would recommend getting your lift pass there as friends we went with saved about 20 quid each doing so.
The hotel Gainsleit in Soll was great. Steve and his family mades us very welcome (even though the sauna, steam room and whirpool are all nude. Its Austrian). Would also recommend getting a massage form Angelika. Really eases the legs.
Probably wouldn't go again. Stick with Banff Canada.

We enjoyed Christmas week in Soll, having organised the trip privately. This is our 10th stay in Soll and we keep returning for the village charm, friendliness of the locals, excellent ski school, huge ski area and excellent value for money. All this is wrapped up in the unique brand of Austrian gemutlichkeit that they have perfected so well over the decades. We have skied in France, and the resorts of the Alberg in western Austria, but Soll keeps drawing us back with this superb combination.
The snow was pretty poor, and got worse as we went through the week, although the use of the snow cannons was very organised when the temperatures allowed, and it is only thanks to this Austrian efficiency that we were able to ski at all.
One downside I feel compelled to mention is that the profile of visitors appears to be getting more and more 'beery' with each year that passes. I used to enjoy the Whiskey Muhle, but after this year's display involving pie-eyed drunkeness and lots of hooded teenagers, I think I'll pass in the future. The Salvenstadl is more enjoyable, if you can bear the smoke and din. As of a couple of years, the village, thankfully now also has some more adult places in the shape of Bella Vita's (excellent food) and Rossini's across the road. Meanwhile, Soll even has its own club night this year in Buffalo's run by one of the ski teachers, although I can't vouch for its quality.
Needless to say, we'll be back as soon as we can.

We visited Soll last year and stayed at the Hotel Sport Modlinger. This Hotel is situated at the bottom end of the village and there is a ski bus to the Ski School meeting point. The Sport Modlinger is pretty basic 2/3 star but the food was nice and the staff are very friendly.
The village is a charming little place with enough to keep a family interested. The bars are excellent especially the whisky Muller. We arrived at this bar and were a bit worried about taking the children in as we were unsure if they would be allowed. "Hey England You've a lot to learn off these Austrian people". The staff were brilliant with the kids and even started to play board games with them while we had a drink. Airtours were our tour company and they to were superb. At the end of the week they had a down hill skiing race and awarded medals to the children in a special ceremony in the whisky Muller. Do not go on the Toboganning trip if your faint hearted it's boardering on lethal. Soll for skiing I could not fault. We are good intermediates and we found plenty to keep us busy. The children loved ski school and I have to say the instruction was first rate. We will definately return to Soll in the future. If your looking for your first skiing experience this is definately the place.

Just back, was in Soll Feb 11th-18th 2006 and had brill time. It snowed like hell the week before we went and it had the decency to clear up just in time for our first morning. The Skiwelt area is huge and provides loads of skiing but if you are looking for a challenge it's probably not the place for you - plenty of fast red run skiing but few blacks. Hotel Postwirt was brill - lovely food and plenty of it and a friendly bar. If you like your music then Soll is the business, I saw a couple of bands a night - cheers to The Misfits (Geordie duo, ace guitarist), Red Sky (rock covers, girlie singer), Bloodshot Eyes (surrounded by sozzled Irish singers). The Whisky Mhule is the late place but I did get a bit fed up of revellers yelling past my window at 3am. A recomended resort, we're going back by motorbike in the Summer to mountain bike / walk / camp. Can't wait...probably won't ski there again due to lack of steep stuff.

Snowboarding Soll Austria 2006 Well, what a blaze we all had in Austria for a what seemed to be a very short week! Soll is a fantastic picturesque place to visit, cheap, extremely pretty and most of all, great snowboarding, what more could a boarder want?! The week didn't get of to the best of starts with an 1hr and half wait in Newcastle airport, but a couple of extra pints did the trick... plus the mandatory Burger King ;-) We eventually boarded the plane, all of in anticipation of the weather we were to be greeted with. We had checked all of the forecasts and we were assured of clear skies, but hey, you know what weather men can be like, we just hoped the weather would be kind to us. Unfortunately we landed in Salzburg early evening so it was dark.. but one thing was sure; the amount of snow! There was stacks of it, and the run on the bus up and into the mountains showed more and more and more... every mile we got slightly.. should I say excessively excited! We arrived in Soll at appropriately 9 at night, and once unloaded of the bus and settled into our hotel, we went for a wonder, and I wasn't disappointed. The rest of the guys had been to Soll the year before but due to work commitments I was unable to go, so this visit to Soll was my first, and as I have said, I wasn't disappointed at all! The place is beautiful, we were lucky enough to have a hotel smack bang in the centre of town, only a minutes walk from all the restaurants and bars, easy staggering distance! The weeks boarding The 1st day got of to a flying start, having found my feet we set of for some of the higher red runs... oooh there steep! By the end of the 1st day, I was wondering.. as with all snowboarding holidays, why do we pay to hurt so much?? But what a laugh we had. The night came to a quick close though as our the hotel proprietor came up to our room at 10 at night and asked us to stop laughing... yip we said the same! The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th days were much the same, get up at the crack of dawn, breakfast then the Ski lift up the mountain. Strap on a plank of wood to our feet and jump of near vertical drops and make our way to the bottom on the mountain, once there, repeat trying not to mow down skiers in the process, though should I say, trying to avoid skiers with boarder hatred. Opps, down he goes! All the way during the week we would take as many photographs and video as possible then on an evening download them all onto the laptop for a good laugh at the days proceedings. One such day, Bri decided to take a long red run down the mountain holding the camcorder in is hand. We insisted he be careful, but Bri being Bri, this went in one ear and came out the other without a taking anything in. Anyway, a good five to ten minutes passed and we had heard nothing from him on the walkie talkies so we thought every thing was going fine. That was until they buzzed with Bri on the other end complaining that he had taken a rough fall and cut his eye. We were all obviously concerned ;-) well, once we had all pealed our self's out of the snow caused by laughing so much that we fell over ;-) He ended up making his way back up to the top of the mountain and the eye wasn't to bad, but the best part was that the entire run, including the fall had been captured on the camcorder.. ooooh we did laugh that night! Come the end of the week, to say we were shattered is putting it mildly, we had no legs left in us, we would ask the board to turn and our legs said oooh nooo that's not going to happen today, so with this in mind, we took the last day nice and steady just enjoying the beautiful clear blue skies and fantastic conditions; knowing that we had seen the majority of the SkiWelt during the week The end! Well thats it, a fantastic holiday over.. will we be going back to Soll next year, your damn right we are, and a possibilty we'll be going back come the middle of march this year. Great Holiday!!

Went to Soll (29/01/2006 to 05/02/2006) and I have to it was a fantastic place to ski. We were extremely lucky with the weather - 7 days of cloudless sunny skies - though towards the end of the week the runs were getting a little icy. There is more than enough skiing in the region for your average weeks holiday. You can do the tour of all the villages from Soll(except Westendorf which you have to take a free bus to.) relatively easily - around 4-6 hour round trip depending on whether you repeat any sunny, uncrowded runs on the way! We found that the runs tended to be less crowded around Soll side (especially the two excellent reds on the way to Ellmau after taking the chair down to the left as you come out of the middle station). There was one bottleneck area around Sheffau / Ellmau where a series of four / five runs end forming one big crossroad. Overall waiting time was minimal - we never waited more than 10 minutes - anywhere - with the average being just a few minutes Favourite runs - reds from the top to the Sheffau and Ellmau villages , the reds down to middle station in Soll. The most picturesque encountered was a counnecting 'ski route' red through the woods from Ellmau to Sheffau - all the trees just completely covered in snow and just a nice cruising run. Note it is one way though! I have to disagree somewhat with Andrew - it is true that there are countless red runs to keep intermediates happy (excellent for me) but black runs were a rarity and those encountered seemed... well not really deservedly black especially when comparing to the black slopes in France. Favourite eating place was by Sheffau's middle station - self service, cheaper, generally less crowded and tastier than most others. Be warned the sun dips below the mountain early - by about 1.30pm it was in shade. Arranged the trip independently which isn't as traumatic as it sounds (you just have to spend a little more time and effort) and it worked out around £100 cheaper than the package deals of the tour operators who used our hotel(going by their brochure price)- We stayed half board at the Hotel Austria which interesting to note offered us more menu options at dinner and OUR choice of desert than to people who had booked packages. We also used a scheduled airline (BA to Innsbruck -) which flew off at a civilised time (which is why we didn't use ryan air), then very efficient train to Worgl station (35 minutes on a fast one, about 15Euro return each) and then a taxi to resort (15 minutes, about 20Euro total). The only real drag and negative point was getting from the hotel (which was slap bang in the centre of the village) by ski bus to the gondola up - think rush hour tube journey with skis and poles prodding into you. Best tip - if staying in the village centre - hire your skis from the shop at the gondola and pay for the additional ski deposit (only 12 euros for the week) I would defintely go back. My only other reservation is that the villages are all on the low side (700 to 800m) so i would leave booking accommodation to almost the last minute (i booked three weeks in advance)

Just returned from a fantastic week in Soll (14/01/06 - 21/01/06). The skiing was fantastic, probably helped by the above average snowfall. Soll provides good access to the skiwelt area of Austria and I suggest you explore the whole area as you will not be disappointed with any. A large number of gondola's and lifts make this a great place to ski. Only fault is the poor ski maps but getting abit lost didn't really matter as that only opened up more fantastic runs (that goes for the whole area rather than Soll). I would say its not best for beginners, due to lack of blue and green runs, its definitely a resort for intermediates. We ate out every night and all the restaurants were excellent and good value for money. The night life was a little disappointing, but the Apres ski was good fun. We stayed at the Pension Schoenblick, a little dated inside, but great location, large, comfortable, well equipped rooms and friendly staff makes this hotel fantastic value for money. In conclusion, great skiing, excellent food with average nightlife, and a great location to explore the whole skiwelt area.

Spent new year here with my family in the Hotel Tyrol. Very good hotel, superb food. Had friends in the Ganzlet Hotel who recommended the host's fantastic hospitality. A great resort for beginners and intermediates. Very good value for money in the village and mountain restaurants and bars plus cheap taxis. Also very few shops for the wife to spend money in. Also a good sledge run from mid station to the bottom at only 5 euros a day including sledge hire, bargain! I would recommend it with the family but not perhaps early season, although we were very lucky with the snow conditions. Overall very good.

Just got back (13/3/2004)from a really great week skiing in soll. For good intermediates it is a fantastic place to go. The Scheffau bowl is incredible. Good place to eat is the DorfStuble. Worst place to stay is the Pension Nederacher. Boring basic breakfast and if you go half board (as we did with airtours) eat up the road at the Franzhoff, another basic simple unapetizing meal (set meal, no selection). The ski room has little or no heating and as such better to dry your boots in your room if you can avoid the landlady. From beginner to good intermediate, a really good place to ski. Has really great places to eat in the mountains.

Just returned from a week in Soll. First time to Austria and I fell in love with the place. With two different levels of ability within the group advanced and beginner Soll catered for both needs. It is an excellent resort to build confidence and I would highly recommend the ski school. Stayed at the Bergland Hotel which is in a great position oposite the ski centre and a short walk to the gondala. We were very lucky with the snow as the week prior to our arrival they'd had a heavy snowfall which lasted all week, however, towards the end of the stay due to the high tempratures they were in need of some fresh snow, the excellent use of the snow cannons ment that the conditions were kept good all week. I would not hesitate in recommending soll.

We travel to Soll every year as a family, my dad and his wife, me and my girlfriend and other friends. We have stayed in a variety of different hotels, and enjoy the different restaurants and bars for our evening meals, the Dorfstubin is our favoutite especially for the 'Woodchopper Steaks', great food can be found in the village with different flavours to suit every one. We enjoy listening to the bands in the evenings, especially our friends 'The Bloodshot Eyes'!!, My girlfriend has skied various resorts on the continent and recons that Soll is teh friendlist and the best value for money available, the low altitude may be offputting for people but there are many snow cannons on the slopes and the Ski Welt maintainance guys work hard to make the best use of these. The large ski welt area has many runs available for all abilities and there are plenty of runs to keep everyone amused throughout the holiday, if you fancy something different, the bowling alley in the Tenne is good fun and if you fancy a sliegh ride through the village this can also be arranged. The up to date swimming pool is good for relaxing tired muscles and is reasonable in price.

Just got back from 3rd consecutive year in Soll and it was best skiing yet. They've replaced virtually all the T-Bars now and the 'Flying Sofa's' are superb. Apres Ski was somewhat disappointing-some of the bands seemed to be more caberet than music based. The Salven Stadl is still the place to be before you go to the Whiskey Muhle for the remainder of the night. One surprise was the quality of the food, beer and atmosphere of the Hotel Austria bar-well recommended is you stay in a B&B and want a cheap, good quality evening meal.

Pop in and say hi ill be at the Whisky playin the nail game most probably and listenin to all the great bands, oh yeh and getting leathered. See ya'll soon.

Just got back from Soll, excellent snow, snowed on the Sunday and through the week. Boarded all week nearly all the runs were open. Was possible to board the whole area. Went from 4th to 11th Jan 2003, just in time for a massive snow dump. My first powder boarding, it was ace.

There is now only one T-Bar on the village field, and one near the middle station. The nursery slopes are easy chairs, there is now a gondola to the top of the Hohe Salve, and recently when a T-Bar is replaced, it is with an 8 person chair or a Gondola! I will be leaving tomorrow for my 25th 4 week holiday in Soll. One of the things which keeps me going back is the constant investment in upgrading facilities. See you on the hill!

Hi, I am David Adams and I am the manager of the Whisky Muhle in Soll. People may remember that the Whiskey used to have go-go girls but this hasn't been the case since I started running it 5 years ago. We do not charge entry other than on organised nights. We have the best live music 6 times a week with bands brought over from the UK. The Whisky is now 2 bars, an apres-ski bar and a sports bar. The atmosphere is very much suitable for all ages.
