Valfrejus
Valfrejus: reviews
- Mike Smith (20 September 2009)
Went to Valfrejus in March 2009. Not a massive amount of piste, could do them all in a couple of days, runs not very well groomed. Ideal for Val Thorens though (superb!).

Spent a week here from 31st Jan 2009; not impressed. The village is pleasant enough and our accommodation (Chalets du Thabor) was fine, truly ski in - ski out, but the ski area, as well as being small is not very skier friendly. There is no real base area, and at mid-station level there is a huge flat area which really needs a rope tow to avoid tedious & tiring poling. But the worst feature was the off hand attitude of the lift company, most of whose employees seemed reluctant to leave their little cabins even when a minor accident, due to inadequate preparation of the snow at the chair arrival point, could have had serious consequences - the lift attendant made no attempt to help, or even stop the lift. Also the signposting was very poor - at the top staton of the gondola there are no signs - even though there are about 5 pistes starting from there. The only available blue run back down to the resort was usually poorly groomed (the only other one was closed the whole week, as was one of the chairs). We found Aussois, and especially La Norma (both included in the area pass), more pleasant places to ski.

We skied at Valfrejus for a weekend 23.3.07 and it didn't stop snowing. The pistes were empty and everyone was friendly.
We returned for a week on the 12.1.08 with our children and couldn't believe our luck oodles of snow all week and blue sky.
Not a huge area, if you wish to ski on piste, but that doesn't matter if you buy the area pass as it covers Aussois and La Norma. They even provide bus transport if you don't want to drive.
You also get discounted rates at 20 other ski resorts in the Maurienne Valley, including the new Orelle gondola which takes you straight into Val Thorens.
Lift passes, ski hire, lessons, food, drink and accomodation are all cheap in comparison to the bigger resorts, what's not to like about it?!
The resort and ski area is high and north facing so holds the snow. The resort is attractive and easy to reach and the motorway stops at the foot of the mountain.
I'd recommend having a car to use to take advantage of whats on offer here.
One last secret - the off piste is vast and easy to access, don't tell everyone!
Enjoy your sliding this season, whatever your persuasion.

We visited Valfrejus in 2006 and 2007 and prices are pretty cheap. The snow was much better this year with most runs open, though it was quite slushy near the bottom of the mountain in the afternoon. Several runs were either closed or very icy. Use Ecole de Ski Internationale for lessons, good English spoken and a good ski school.
Valfrejus is a good base for visiting other small resorts in the Maurienne valley. The other one we visited, Les Karrelis, had excellent skiing and very well maintained pistes.

Hello, Just came back from Val Frejus (15-01) The piste conditions were very poor. A lot of rock on the slopes. Some slopes were closed and I wrecked my skies. Info out of Val Thorens said conditions there were great.
