latest Ski Club Snowcast

Summary

Much of Europe welcomed notable snowfall on Tuesday 31st January. Although many locations in France, Switzerland and Austria have subsequently received further snowfall, it has been rather light in comparison to Tuesday’s snowfall. Heavy cloud continues to loiter over many European resorts on Thursday 2nd February where Austrian resorts could receive additional snowfall. However, in Switzerland and France, it appears the sun is slowly burning the clouds away with a handful of resorts enjoying a pleasant day.

Many resorts in Italy enjoyed healthy snowfall between 3 and 20cm on Thursday meaning fresh tracks could be found all over the mountains as the vast majority of lifts were in operation.

Temperatures have plummeted even further where high areas such as Kaprun recorded minus 22 degrees on the glacier, so it is paramount to wrap up warm and to protect areas of skin that are normally exposed when skiing. These harsh temperatures does however mean the pistes will hold up well, creating great quality skiing.

15cm of fresh snow fell at Red Mountain and Big White, in Canada, on Wednesday 1st February. All runs are in excellent condition and off piste areas are great too.

There was a dusting of fresh snow in California where they’ve had a dry season so far. Further north in Alaska lies Alyeska where there was 35cm of fresh snow on Wednesday.

Austria

If it wasn’t snowing in Austrian resorts on Thursday 2nd February, then fresh snow could have been on the way as a result of heavy cloud cover and very cold temperatures. Resorts including Lech, Zurs (180/395cm) and Obergurgl (80/120cm) all enjoyed around 5cm of new snowfall on Thursday which notably improved pistes and fresh pockets of powder could easily be found.

Furthermore, it was very cold on Monday, although this is not out of the ordinary for this time of year. However it was a bitter minus 22 degrees on the glacier at Kaprun (130/240cm).

France

Tuesday 31st January was France’s main day for snow falling across almost all their resorts. Low lying resorts such as Risoul (100/180cm) really benefited from on this dag where a superb 50cm of fresh snow fell. Subsequently, on Thursday 2nd February the resort enjoyed bluebird skies.

It was also a beautiful clear day in many other locations including Les Deux Alpes (90/300cm) and Les Gets (85/210cm) where healthy snowfall was also received on Tuesday. Morzine (60/300cm) and Avoriaz (260/300cm) reported particularly fresh conditions after a notable 10cm of new snow fell on Wednesday 1 February. On Thursday, the skies were clear which created a fantastic riding environment.  In fact our leader in Avoriaz said the conditions ‘were every skier’s dream’.

Snowfall continued in a handful of featured resorts on Thursday including a respectful 20cm snowfall in Bareges/La Mongie (90/140cm). Cauterets (80/230cm) also received 20cm in the early hours of Thursday, and the sun was shinning during the day, making conditions fantastic.

Switzerland

Once again, there was a large variety of different conditions across our featured Swiss resorts on Thursday 2nd February.

A handful of locations such as Saas Fee (81/351cm), Zermatt (110/170CM) and Zinal (70/190cm) enjoyed pleasant clear skies. In Zermatt, skiers could really appreciate the views of the Matterhorn in all its glory, although it was very chilly here with temperatures reaching around minus 15 degrees.

In contrast, thick cloud loitered over many featured Swiss resorts on Thursday, however in some instances the sun was burning through in locations such as Leysin (90/295cm) and Les Mosses (150/210cm).

What all Swiss resorts have in common is that after decent snowfalls occurring mainly on Tuesday 31st January and Wednesday 1st February, fresh tracks could easily be found throughout the country.

Italy

It was a fantastic powdery day on Thursday 2nd February for many featured Italian resorts. In Arabba (42/58cm) it was snowing lightly with 7cm falling. Val Senales (66/132cm) and Cavalese (2/100cm) received a little more with around 10cm and had all lifts in operation so skiers could access many fresh tracks across the mountain. The winner for the most snow received in Italy was Cortina (15/60cm) with 20cm of fresh snowfall.

In contrast a handful of resorts such as Cervinia (115/300cm) enjoyed a lovely day with clear blue skies where skiers and boarder enjoyed spectacular views on the Plateau Rosa.

Andorra

It was a very snowy start to the week in Andorra with up to 50cm falling in many areas. The Ski Club Leader based in Soldeu (50/80cm) spoke of great powder skiing and excellent snow. It had been a dry start to the season and this was the biggest storm of the season so far.

The deepest base is at Arcalis (70/170cm) where off piste skiing is good too. Powder can still be found on quieter parts of the mountain and the forecast for sunny and cold weather means the snow should remain good.

Norway/Sweden

It’s still very cold in Norway, with temperatures of around -20C in most resorts. This will keep the snow in good condition though, particularly off piste. Nearly all the terrain at Hemsedal (75/95cm) was open on Thursday 2nd February. The cold weather is expected to last until the weekend and then it should warm up a little.

Germany

There’s great snow in Germany at the moment, thanks to the cold weather. Garmisch (60/430cm) still has a superb base depth with over four metres on the upper slopes. It’s very cold though so make sure to wrap up warm.

It’s a similar story at Reit im Winkl (100/300cm). For a low resort it has an excellent base depth and ensures the rest of the season will be enjoyed with plenty of snow to ski on. As with Garmisch, it was very cold on Thursday 2nd February but the skiing is great.

Bulgaria

It’s gone very cold in Bulgaria as they’re being affected by the headline cold weather in Europe. The temperature at Bansko (140/185cm) was around -15C during the day. This is helping to keep the snow in good condition although the more used runs are a little hard.

The deepest base depth is at Borovets (200/240cm).  They have a great amount of snow on the mountain for the time of year and the cold weather ensures it’s going nowhere soon.

Scotland

Scotland has good skiing available across the country. The recent cold weather that’s affected the whole of the UK means its cold at the ski resorts too.

Nevis Range (20/50cm) has good snow on the upper mountain but it’s fairly hard because of the cold. They were expecting high winds on Thursday but these never materialised and it turned into a great day.

Further east it’s a similar story. There’s good snow to be had at The Lecht (15/30cm), where groomed runs are complete and firm. Off piste skiing is fairly limited due to a lack of base depth but the open runs are skiing well.

USA

Alyeska (137/285cm) reported 35cm of fresh snow on Wednesday 1st February. The mountain was stormbound for the whole day and expects to be for a few more days. The fresh snow was accompanied by high winds so it will take the avalanche control teams a while to make the area safe, before they can fully open again.

There hasn’t been any fresh snow recently in Colorado but it’s expected to snow on Friday 3rd February. Vail (89cm) has less snow than it would expect for February but the Ski Club Leader based there at the moment reported excellent conditions all over the mountain.

There was also a dusting of fresh snow down in California. They’re in need of loads of snow but the 5cm that fell on Wednesday 1st February should at least freshen up the open runs and make skiing that bit more fun.

Canada

Resorts in interior British Columbia received the most snow this week, with around 20cm falling in most areas. Red Mountain (140/169cm) enjoyed 15cm of fresh snow on Wednesday 1st February. They’ve got a good base depth now and all areas of the mountain are open and skiing well.

It’s a similar story at Big White (182cm) where 16cm of fresh snow fell on Wednesday. They’ve enjoyed a snowy couple of weeks and with a base depth approaching two metres the mountain is in great shape. Sunnier weather is expected for the week ahead but it should remain fairly cold.

The little heli ski area of Skeena (600/900cm) has a truly astonishing amount of snow, with nine metres of it lying on the upper mountain. They received over four metres of fresh snow in ten days and subsequently have a huge amount of snow on the mountains. As you might expect, the skiing is excellent.

European Weather Outlook

Cloudy skies bringing snow flurries are expected to loiter over all Austrian resorts over the weekend until early next week bringing a very light dustings in some locations. It appears the clouds are starting to shift in France where by Saturday the majority of resorts should enjoy beautiful bluebird skies. This theme is largely similar for resorts across Switzerland and Italy.

Temperatures however are expected to remain extremely low at around -20C in many locations so make sure you have some nice warm layers to put on.

North American Weather Outlook

Canada is expecting a sunny weekend and start to next week. It’s the first sunny period in quite a while and will be very welcome. No new snow is expected at most resorts and the temperature should remain reasonably low, but warm enough to keep the snow soft.

It should be snowier in America with Colorado expecting the most. Aspen is expecting snow on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd February before more light snow early next week.

Cold and clear weather is expected in the east of the country which should help preserve their snow. The temperature should remain below 0C for at least the next nine days at Sunday River.
