Snow overview for France
Monday 30 March 2015

The weekend saw precipitation return to the majority of French resorts. Unfortunately this fell as rain at many locations, then the drop in temperature during the night on Sunday turned the rain to snow, providing some fantastic powder skiing conditions on Monday morning, 30th March. Rain did fall at some lower locations though, with slopes below about 1,500m worst affected.

The deepest snowfall was reported at the highest part of the Chamonix valley skiing area (0/222cm). Here a metre of fresh snow was reported up on Aiguille du Midi, with around half that amount 600m lower on the Grands Montets skiing area.

Val Thorens (145/240cm), the highest ski base in the Three Valleys, reported 50cm of new snow on Monday morning, although Courchevel (79/146m) did not report any new snow.

Lift operations in the Espace Killy were limited on Monday morning. You could not ski up on the glacier at Tignes (115/185cm) and many other high lifts were also closed due to the severe weather and heavy snowfall. At Val d’Isere (115/185cm) it was a similar situation with only 50% of the lifts operating on Monday morning. This meant that the slopes were relatively busy across the Espace Killy due to the increased visitors this week for the Easter break and the limited amount of terrain that was open. This was not too much of an issue though as the snow was fantastic. The British Universities Snowsports Council (BUSC) Main Event takes place in Tignes this week too, with over one and a half thousand students.

The Northern Alps will have cloudy weather for most of this week, with light snowfall expected on most days. The Southern Alps and Pyrenees should remain a lot brighter although these resorts will not benefit from the fresh snowfall seen further north.

Excellent Oz en Oisans

This was our 4th visit to this resort, and again we stayed at Le Chalet des Neiges in North-facing Oz en Oisans through Peak Retreats(excellent operator). Overall the chalet is excellent, as is the welcome and customer service. Whenever something breaks, it is replaced very quickly and with a smile 😃. The village is ski-in/ski-out with ski school starting on our doorstep and a lovely torchlight procession involving the children's ski school classes - they love it every year.
All 11 of us signed up for ESF Ski School, and had mixed experiences. Our children in the 2* and Bronze groups had a fantastic time and really progressed, but the adults had good to poor teaching. As it was half term the adult groups had 11-12 in them and were mixed ability so didn't really meet anyone's needs well, especially level 3 where we received very little individual feedback and it was not challenging enough for the most advanced. Also a lot of time was wasted in lift queues. This was the worst we have found it. None of the adults will chose ESF in half term again.
We had quite a lot of snow during the first 24hrs which set the resort up for the week. We then had 5 days of clear sunshine so the resort did very well to keep the runs in reasonable condition. Some blue runs were mogully by the end of the days but there was very little ice. A few runs in Auris were closed as the grass was showing through and there was grass on the black moguls in the Signal area.
Overall a good family resort with a large number of green runs for beginners plus a large variety of more advanced runs, good ESF children's ski school and reasonably priced accommodation.
