Snow overview for USA
Thursday 20 November 2014

The skiing is continuing to improve across the United States, with both east and west coast resorts receiving new snowfall this week. As a result more resorts have already opened and many more are due to open for the coming weekend.

More terrain has opened across Colorado following a week of excellent snowmaking conditions combined with last week’s heavy snowfall. Arapahoe Basin (46cm) has opened the Lenawee Face lift enabling top to bottom riding for the first time this season and Copper Mountain (66cm) had three lifts and four trails open on Thursday 20th November. Vail (46cm) will celebrate opening day on Friday 21st with live music and breakfast at the base of Gondola One and skiing across an impressive 540 acres.

Up to a foot of snow is forecast in Utah this weekend, providing Alta (38cm) with the chance of a powder-filled opening weekend. Mammoth Mountain (36/46cm) is currently our open resort in California, but is set to be joined this weekend by Heavenly (76cm).

On the east coast new snow has fallen this week and cold climates have resulted in good snowmaking conditions. On Thursday 20th November Killington (20/41cm) had three lifts open serving 16 runs, but this is set to increase over the weekend. More terrain is set to open at Sunday River (30cm) and both Stowe (15/61cm) and Smugglers’ Notch (45cm) are set to open for skiing on Saturday.

Aspen is renowned for it's rich and famous locals and visitors and its also busy with those wanting to be rich and famous. But if you don't fall into their habit of watching eachother, there are some very welcoming locals, a vibrant apres scene and world class skiing to have fun with.

Just above the village, Aspen mountain has wonderful, long runs for all abilities. As usual in the US, there's your share of 'groomers' each day mixed with bumps, off-piste and great tree runs. On a powder day, when everyone heads to Snowmass or Highlands, you'll have it all to yourself.

Snowmass is a 15 minute, free bus ride away and will suit all abilities. Ridges and tree runs abound. Highlands bowl is the steeper area, with great tree chutes and then the bowl to hike into and its famous 50 degree slopes. Well worth it when the lifties have the BBQ going at the bottom with free hot dogs!

In town, the J-bar, Little Annies and Zanes are fun. Or you can spend more on a drink and watch the Cougars in action in Little Nell's. Su Casa does great Marg's, Burrito's and all things Mexican for prices that seem more small town than glitzy Aspen.

Aspen is really worth a visit, especially as part of a road trip along the I-70, or combined with Crested Butte, Telluride or Silverton.
