Snow overview for France
Monday 24 November 2014

The conditions warmed up across the French resorts over the weekend, but this did not stop Alpe d’Huez (10/100cm), La Clusaz (0/100cm) and Val Thorens (50/90cm) opening lifts for visitors on Saturday 22nd November. This was only a temporary weekend opening for Alpe d’Huez and La Clusaz, while at Val Thorens the lifts are now open daily for their season.

Tignes (15/70cm) was already open and again this week you can enjoy great skiing up on the Grande Motte glacier. The linked resort of Val d’Isere (15/50cm), which together with Tignes forms the Espace Killy ski area, will open for the winter season this coming Saturday 29th November.

Serre Chevalier (0/156cm) plans to open for weekend skiing on 29th November too, as a season pre-opener. They are saying this is the first time they’ve opened for a pre-opener in November.

Chatel (0/10cm) plans to open for weekend skiing in the Pre-la-Joux area from 29th November. The resort will only be open at weekends until they open daily from 13th December. Les Deux Alpes (0/90cm), Bareges/La Mongie (0/20cm) and Cauterets (15/25cm) all plan to open on Saturday too, although the Pyrenean resorts have not received as much fresh snow as the Alpine destinations. Font Romeu, a Pyrenean resort, has unfortunately postponed its opening from this coming Saturday due to the lack of snow cover.

The architecture and design of the resort will not be to everyone's liking, but being ski out and in is convenient. We were in the Pas du Lac block very close to the top station of the Prodain cable car. We got a transfer from Geneva (90 mins) to the bottom of the Prodain lift and took it up to Avoriaz. We bought our lift passes at the bottom and got a free return on the cable car for our arrival and departure days which saved us some cash. Getting luggage to and from our apartment was ok, but for most apartments a horse drawn sleigh or caterpillar track taxi would probably be required, particularly if you have children too small to carry their own bags.

I am not a fan of self catering in France, the apartment would have been very cramped with four people in it, fortunately there were just two of us. Restaurants were ok, but don't start serving until 7pm and it was essential to book. Which could be a problem for a family with young children. We'd recommend the Wild Horse, the burgers and ribs we had were excellent. There are several supermarkets in the main shopping area for those who would prefer to cook for themselves.

We were there after UK school holidays but some French schools were still on holiday, so it was quite busy, but still lift queues were seldom more than 5 Minutes. Runs are predominately red and blue. There are off-piste possibilities from the lifts, but you would need to get an early start to get first tracks. Being high the snow was excellent, when Avoriaz was getting fresh powder, it was raining in Morzine!!
