Snow overview for France
Thursday 30 March 2017

After a really good spell of fresh snow for a number of resorts over the weekend, Thursday 30th of March saw a return to spring conditions. Slopes are starting to suffer in many places, especially at lower altitude, and it is really feeling like the end of the season now.

Lower slopes in Alpe d’Huez (100/200cm) are looking a bit worn to say the least, so it’s definitely worth staying up high for the best snow. As the sun melts the snow, it may be best to call it a day early and enjoy a drink on the terrace – slushy slopes will be the order of the afternoon. Lower slopes were suffering in a number of resorts, but none more so than the aptly name Portes du Soleil, where the sun was shining. Slopes down to Chatel (10/60cm), Les Gets (10/85cm) and Morzine (40/100cm) were on life support and groomers are doing a great job keeping them open. Conditions on the upper slopes are still very fun; it just might take you longer than usual to get to the good snow.

There were some excellent conditions still to be enjoyed in Flaine (42/265cm), where the best skiing was mid-morning, when slopes had been softened somewhat but were not too soft. This is not an exception, and if you like firmer slopes then these can be found in a number of resorts if you get up early enough.

The good and the bad (but no ugly)

We actually stayed in Ardent and so based ourselves out of Les Linderets rather than in Avoriaz. But we were sharing the slopes with the Avoriaz crowds (and I mean crowds - it was half term). So that's my first whinge, I knew it was going to be busy but underestimated just how busy. Many of the slopes were constantly packed. The bottleneck of the 3 chairlifts in Avoriaz (particularly Tour) got very irritating. It was very hard to avoid as the Tour lift was the only way back up to the top of the town and back to Linderets. So 45 min queues were a daily occurrence. One day many of the runs and lifts were closed due to high winds and it was absolute carnage. Having said that, the lifts out of Linderets were generally okay if you managed to avoid the peak times. The bubble up from Ardent was always quick and easy.

We had beautiful weather most of the time. This meant nice conditions in the morning but horrible, soft, cut up slopes in the afternoon (due to the aforementioned crowds). We found this even on the higher slopes. On the couple of days when the clouds descended, the snow improved and the fair weather skiers stayed away (so you take the rough with the smooth).

The good - it's obviously a huge, extensive area with a big variety of slopes. The restaurants and bars in and around Linderets were very good. I'd recommend skiing down to the goat's village and having a long lunch there before making your way back down the mountain.

Would we go back? Yes, but not in half term!
