Snow overview for USA
Thursday 25 May 2017

Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, is currently closed as the team at the resort begin work shifting some of the remaining snow base to facilitate summer activities. The resort is due to partially reopen for skiing again on the 10th June.

Over on the west coast of the USA in Oregon, the base depth at Timberline (424cm) has been on a steady decline over the past couple of weeks. Temperatures at mid mountain level were at around +5C on Thursday 25th May, which is considerably lower than it has been this week. For those heading up, the resort has typically been running three lifts on a daily basis, and there has been some lovely corduroy snow early on in the morning which churns up as the day goes on.

Have to agree with all that has been said before. Breckenridge is a great town to visit to get a sense of the American old town with a neat ski area. We stayed in a private condo in town within walking distance of the gondola but there is a free bus that comes round every 15 minutes if you want to save walking in ski boots. The town has plenty of bars and restaurants but they were very busy at the weekend when all the locals (from Denver) come up to ski, so if you want to eat out ensure you phone ahead and book a table (try Mondis restaurant - an old western style bar/restaurant for great steaks and good dining experience). The town is pretty and has atmosphere even just to walk around. If you are self catering there is a great supermarket on the edge of town, which even has 'British style' teabags! The ski area (Peaks 6 - 10) offers great runs for all abilities though after 4 days you may want to try another area for a change of view. The slopes are generally well groomed each night, so go up early if you like the corduroy! Watch out for ski patrol if you are a speedy skier, as they will stop you if you ski too fast in a slow zone. As mentioned previously, the resort is at 10,000ft, so you will feel the difference in breathing when active. Drink plenty of water and limit your activity for the first 2 days and you should be okay. All the staff at the ski area and in town were very friendly and welcoming. They were pleased to see english visitors and we even got a discount on our ski lockers at the base of peak 8 for a couple of days. Plenty to eat on the mountain and free water everywhere but if you're on a tight budget, take a picnic as its not cheap (unless the £ - $ exchange rate gets better!). It's really worth staying longer than a week if you're flying from Europe, so maybe take in Steamboat or Aspen, Copper Creek or Park City etc for a few days too. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would recommend visiting Breck' at least once.
