Snow overview for Norway
Thursday 23 March 2017

It was a great day for skiing on packed, well groomed, and occasionaly fresh runs in Scandinavia on Thursday 23rd of March.

Conditions remain generally excellent in Norway and Sweden at the moment. There were some very changeable weather conditions in Geilo (70cm), with a mixture of sun, cloud and even a bit of snow in the forecast. The slopes in Hemsedal were still pretty fresh thanks to the recent snow. They were packed, grippy and fast. A stark contrast to many Alpine resorts where spring conditions are dominating. There were similar conditions in Trysil (91cm) where recent snow has made for some excellent conditions.

Over in Sweden there was new snow in Are (85cm), where 2 cm fell this morning – excellent conditions there. Salen (98cm) also has excellent conditions with slopes being fresh and enjoyable.

We have just returned from a lovely week in Forest Chalet with Crystal at Geilolia side of valley.
What a surprise, so quiet, despite being Danish half term and lots of visitors. No lift queues, immaculately groomed pistes, not extensive or overly difficult, so perfect for beginners and intermediates. perfect for families. A fun place to ski, with snow parks, and self timed slalom pistes. Prices, except for alcohol, cheaper than the Alps. Mountain restaurants do not have a large choice, but food is plentiful and freshly cooked in all the ones we tested. Prices are good. Eating out in the evening is also good, but watch the cost of wine. About £40 a bottle for the normal standard.
Plenty of non skiing activities. Recommend the dog sledge ride on the frozen lake, especially if you have ever fancied 'mushing', but the dogs seem to know the ropes.
Downside: the bus service linking the two sides of the valley seems to be unreliable, despite the timetable. Recommend alternating the skiing days between the sides of the valley. The ski taxis are more reliable, and reasonable if there is a party of four or six people.
As Geilo is on main Bergen to Oslo rail link, easy to reach by flying either to Bergen or Oslo and catching the train if doing independent travel.
