Snow overview for Austria
Thursday 25 May 2017

Fresh snow fell overnight at some of our featured Austrian resorts, and conditions up high on the glaciers continue to be very good for the time of year.

At Hintertux (280cm) it was a mostly cloudy day with temperatures of around -5C at the summit, and 10cm of fresh snow has provided a further boost to already excellent conditions. In particular the snowpark was looking like it has received a lot of attention of late, and for those heading up today and tomorrow, the slopes are currently very quiet.

Dachstein (390cm) and Kaprun (10/245cm) both received small amounts of fresh snow, and conditions have certainly improved since some of the warmer temperatures and sun at the start of the week.

The glaciers at Pitzal and Molltal are yet to open for the summer season, but the latter has a projected opening on the 15th June.

I had always been put off Ischgl due its reputation for being a rowdy party town, but this was hardly the case.
Ischgl is located in a beautiful, agricultural and authentic valley, just 1.5 hours drive from Innsbruck. Apart from the main resort, there are 3 smaller ski areas, frequented by locals and great fun to ski - highly recommended to take time to ski these.
Ischgl itself has endless skiing and held up very well to the bitter end of the season due to its height and well kept pistes. When there is less snow there is obviously less fun stuff to be had, but with good snow there is fantastic skiing all the way down to the Ischgl side of the valley, but also down to the Swiss side.
The facilities tend to be modern rather than authentic: large, glass modernistic cafes, many self service. But they are all great value, with friendly service and beautiful views. Most of all, basics like toilets are all modern, accessible, clean: a pleasure rather than the nightmare of France.
Plenty of off piste when there has been some snow.
Skiing into the Swiss Valley for lunch, or riding down the mountain into Ischgl on a 2km zip wire add further interest to a trip.
Regular, reliable buses run up and down the valley, meaning that you dont need to stay right in Ischgl: we stayed in Galtur which was delightful. Never before had I stored skis in a cow shed.
The only disappointment was a lack of good apres ski. There was one party bar on the mountain which was fun, but closed at 4.30 and there was apparently late night partying. But nothing inbetween. Every Austrian resort needs a Nederhutte.
