Snow overview for France
Monday 30 March 2015

The weekend saw precipitation return to the majority of French resorts. Unfortunately this fell as rain at many locations, then the drop in temperature during the night on Sunday turned the rain to snow, providing some fantastic powder skiing conditions on Monday morning, 30th March. Rain did fall at some lower locations though, with slopes below about 1,500m worst affected.

The deepest snowfall was reported at the highest part of the Chamonix valley skiing area (0/222cm). Here a metre of fresh snow was reported up on Aiguille du Midi, with around half that amount 600m lower on the Grands Montets skiing area.

Val Thorens (145/240cm), the highest ski base in the Three Valleys, reported 50cm of new snow on Monday morning, although Courchevel (79/146m) did not report any new snow.

Lift operations in the Espace Killy were limited on Monday morning. You could not ski up on the glacier at Tignes (115/185cm) and many other high lifts were also closed due to the severe weather and heavy snowfall. At Val d’Isere (115/185cm) it was a similar situation with only 50% of the lifts operating on Monday morning. This meant that the slopes were relatively busy across the Espace Killy due to the increased visitors this week for the Easter break and the limited amount of terrain that was open. This was not too much of an issue though as the snow was fantastic. The British Universities Snowsports Council (BUSC) Main Event takes place in Tignes this week too, with over one and a half thousand students.

The Northern Alps will have cloudy weather for most of this week, with light snowfall expected on most days. The Southern Alps and Pyrenees should remain a lot brighter although these resorts will not benefit from the fresh snowfall seen further north.

Half term at La Plagne

Was in La Plagne over half term. Snow wise, there was enough snow, but with the crowds, some pistes were worn and icy by the end of the day but the piste bashers were doing a great job overnight. Weather wise - blue skies daily which had a detrimental impact on the south facing slopes Champagny side. Otherwise, the variety and quantity of slopes kept us entertained all week without needing to go to Les Arcs. Something for everyone here - wide pistes above the treeline, or cosier runs through the trees. Lots for beginners and early intermediates, the downside being these pistes were BUSY. Reds and Blacks were noticeably quieter, particularly if you go up Grand Rochette.
Yes, there were lots of people around but with some careful planning, they can be largely avoided. For some reason, the crowds gravitated towards the centre of the resort (i.e. Plagne Centre, Bellecote). First thing in the morning, we skied to the further reaches of La Plagne (e.g. Champagny, Les Coches) and these runs were relatively empty. Avoided the Bellecote bottleneck apart from first thing or lunchtime. Had late lunch (after 2pm) to take advantage of queue less lifts at lunchtime. Also, where there is a long lift (e.g. Roche de Mio, Grand Rochette) from the base stations, we didn't ski all the way back to the bottom, but stopped mid way to catch the shorter lifts back up to the top - these were largely deserted as the majority skied the full run. After 4pm, the lifts queues mainly evaporated (again, apart from Bellecote), so we had many Grand Rochette runs in the last hour of the day.
So apart from the horror of Roche de Mio at 10am which we were caught in once, we had no queueing greater than 5 minutes (ish).
Stayed at Plagne Soleil and enjoyed that much better than our last visit when we were at Plagne Centre.
Hired skis from Intersport and they were good.
