Snow overview for France
Thursday 30 March 2017

After a really good spell of fresh snow for a number of resorts over the weekend, Thursday 30th of March saw a return to spring conditions. Slopes are starting to suffer in many places, especially at lower altitude, and it is really feeling like the end of the season now.

Lower slopes in Alpe d’Huez (100/200cm) are looking a bit worn to say the least, so it’s definitely worth staying up high for the best snow. As the sun melts the snow, it may be best to call it a day early and enjoy a drink on the terrace – slushy slopes will be the order of the afternoon. Lower slopes were suffering in a number of resorts, but none more so than the aptly name Portes du Soleil, where the sun was shining. Slopes down to Chatel (10/60cm), Les Gets (10/85cm) and Morzine (40/100cm) were on life support and groomers are doing a great job keeping them open. Conditions on the upper slopes are still very fun; it just might take you longer than usual to get to the good snow.

There were some excellent conditions still to be enjoyed in Flaine (42/265cm), where the best skiing was mid-morning, when slopes had been softened somewhat but were not too soft. This is not an exception, and if you like firmer slopes then these can be found in a number of resorts if you get up early enough.

Arrived on New Years Eve to a resort which had seen little snow since November and to say I was a little apprehensive was an understatement.

Been to La Tania, Courcheval and Meribel many times but this was my first visit back since 'Snowmageddon' two years ago when we ended up taking 36 hours to get there courtesy of a crisis centre in Albertville. Chambery Airport is not the best to aim for, in fact I would say avoid at all costs.

We stayed in the Christina Apartments run by Pierre Vacance which were excellent and allow for ski in ski out.

Despite the lack of snow, the resorts snow cannons kept us well entertained and I have to say that I have visited many resorts with a lot more snow but not as good skiing. We had a great time. Yes there were some icy patches, but that certainly didn't put us off.

We managed to ski all three valley's over to Val Thorens and had a wonderful time and even though some of the lower slopes were literally brown and the run to Courcheval 1650 was like skiing down a white road, we had no complaints.

Skiing and infrastructure is top notch, though the chairs don't give the same protection as the Austrians, they are fast and the skiing is non stop, if thats what you want.

La Tania as a village is perfect for families, mainly self catering with some great apre ski. Main focal point being the Ski Lodge pub and the Taiga where there is excellent live music played throughout the week.

Having two children of 13 and 15, it's our third time together as a family and each time I've been really confident that all of us are having a great time.

The perfect link to the Trois Vallees - Just don't tell many people!
