Snow overview for France
Thursday 23 April 2015

Mostly sunny skies have been enjoyed across France this week, with warm temperatures leading to spring skiing conditions across the mountain. A significant change in the weather is expected on Saturday however, as wet weather spreads in from the west. This will initially fall as heavy rain to around 2,500m, but will turn increasingly to snow at lower levels on Monday as the freezing level drops to 1,500m. As a result some great powder is possible up high to start the new week.

Therefore, for the best conditions this weekend, head to the highest resorts where snow will be falling, such as Val Thorens (100/220cm), Tignes (45/152cm) and Val d’Isere (45/152cm). The slopes of the Grands Montets above Argentiere (0/175cm) should also offer some good skiing over the weekend.

Most resorts are set to end their winter ski season on Sunday 26th April, so this weekend provides the last opportunity for lift-served turns. These include Alpe d’Huez, Avoriaz, Bonneval-sur-Arc, Cauterets, Chamrousse, Chatel, Courchevel, La Clusaz, La Grave, La Plagne, La Rosiere, La Tania, Le Grand Bornand, Les Arcs, Les Contamines, Les Deux Alpes, Les Menuires, Les Saises, Meribel and Montgenevre. The Three Valleys and Espace Killy links also close, although skiing is still set to be available at Tignes, Val d’Isere and Val Thorens individually.

Our 2nd visit to Les Arcs. 1st time i was skiing, this time I changed to a board.

We stayed in Arc 1600 but went over to the Arc 2000 bowl most days due to better snow and sunnier weather. Most days started very cloudy but 10 minutes later, the top of trans arc gondola, sun! 1600 doesn't have a lot going on at night, our hotel, La Cachette, was half board so ate there every night. A few lunches where had there also and recommended, especially if you use your bar credit for it.

The run back to 1600 is often cut up by the end of the day, Cachette red, but the Mont Blanc run, blue, was ok and not too flat if you keep the speed up.

Arc 1800 seemed much icier than the rest of the resort so only went there by the trans arc lift to get to 2000. We ate in L' Arpette a few times, nothing fancy but good food at reasonable prices.

I was disappointed in the Peisy/Vallandry area this year, a lack of snow ruined some of the best tree lined runs in resort.

The Arc 2000 bowl has a few flat sections, in the middle. This was never a problem on skis, more so on a board. The Aguille Rouge was an experience and worth the views.

We didn't make it to La Plagne but it doubles the size of the ski area so makes it very good value for money.

Sign posting is one of the best I've seen. Every lift has the location you can get to and the runs have the rough area you could end up at. Getting lost is fairly hard!

Overall, a very good selection of runs, wide open 'motorways', narrow roads, tree lined, gentle blues or very steep blacks. Les Arcs seem to have them all. A blue run back to all resorts after a tiring day is welcome.
