Snow overview for Austria
Thursday 22 January 2015

Austria has remained much the same over the past few days, the most recent substantial snow fall was last weekend and this week has been a mixture of sunshine and cloud. Thursday 22nd January was more or less the same with sunshine and scattered cloud seen in the majority of our featured resorts. More central Austrian resorts, particularly in the Zillertal Valley saw cloudier skies.

St Anton im Arlberg (25/125cm) are reporting excellent conditions particularly on the Valluga ski area. General piste conditions are very good after recent snow fall and cold climates, ensuring the pistes are firm and well intact. On Thursday almost all of their lifts were running, a total of 94 lifts were in operation, visibility was changeable due to the mixture of cloudy and sunny skies but generally a good days skiing was enjoyed in St Anton.

A cloudy weekend looms as the vast majority of our featured resorts are expected to be covered in thick cloud. It will be quite cold and there is a chance of fresh snow.

My partner, Heidi, and I stayed at the Hotel Simmerlwirt which was comfortable with large rooms and a nice wellness area. Meals were a little disappointing as far as range of choices went but were wholesome even if the main courses were lacking vegetables. This may have been due to what Crystal Ski pay the hotel, the operator we travelled with, as the food being dished up to the general public looked much more ‘complete’ as meals and in portion size.

I am a reasonable intermediate who is comfortable on all but the steepest Reds and Heidi is a complete beginner. As a resort there was enough to keep me happy although it meant having to get on the Bus to the linked resorts as Niederau only really has 3 runs to talk of. Heidi was less than happy and had it not been for a very good instructor from the Red School would have thrown her Skis and poles over a fence and got on the next flight home. The nursery slopes are short, and in our case, bullet proof ice or poor quality slush depending on the time of day. Although these conditions are good for making an all-round skier they are not good for a nervous first timer. We were told this year was one of their warmest sessions for many years which did not help. The Blue run at the top of the gondola offered better snow but one in particular was steep and short resulting in numerous trips up a dreaded T bar, not a pleasant experience for a first timer.

On the whole the lift cues were not too bad, considering it was the German and Dutch half term and we were plagued with kids who have no idea of manners or cueing. Other than this issue there were no real problems getting to the top of the runs and if you avoided early morning ski school set off time the kids could be, in the main, avoided.

I would not call Niederau a good resort for beginners or improvers as the runs are too limited with no cruisy Blues or easy Red without a bus ride, which after 4 hours of ski school, there was just not time to do.
