Snow overview for France
Thursday 29 January 2015

Thursday morning dawned snowy for most of our featured French resorts. The only places to miss out were the southern Alps (resorts such as Isola 2000) and the Pyrenees (resorts such as Font Romeu). Be careful out there as the avalanche danger is very high.

Some resorts also caught snow earlier in the week, with Flaine (100/180cm) and Samoens (45/78cm) catching 20cm on Tuesday. A further 20cm was recorded on the morning of Thursday 29th January, so powder conditions are to be found across the Grand Massif.

The snowiest spot on Thursday morning was the Chamonix Valley (40/140cm), where 40cm of fresh snow was recorded on the upper slopes. Even down at 1035m in the valley, 20cm of fresh snow was picked up. Be careful when skiing in this region however as the avalanche risk is currently very high. Another area to benefit significantly is the Portes du Soleil, with Avoriaz (120/170cm) seeing 30cm of fresh snow overnight. The even better news is that the snow is that the snow was continuing to fall throughout the day on Thursday.

The heavy snow is expected to continue throughout the weekend, with several pulses of heavy precipitation forecast to cross the French Alps, hopefully bringing up to a metre of fresh snow for many. The next clear spell is forecast for Monday, although it is likely to be short-lived as the snow is set to return again on Tuesday.

Both Cauterets (100/170cm) and Font Romeu (55/75cm) in the Pyrenees dawned dry on Thursday, but very heavy snow is expected to begin through the afternoon. By the end of the weekend a metre of new snow is possible, so some excellent skiing should be on offer over the coming days.

Samoens review

Been to Samoens several times, and heading back this year to warm up for a week before tackling Argentiere. Good range of skiing, on and off piste, for a variety of standards and rarely crowded (trust me, I used to rep and I'm BASI qualified... you can cruise the blues or jump the cliffs or anything in between).

Gondola up to 1600 fast and efficient, queues melt away, and after that the whole Grand Massif is your oyster! If you ski quickly enough it's just about possible to catch up with the leader in Flaine for the day.

Good place if you like a truly French rural ambience rather than the ex-pat style of Espace Killy, Trois Vallees and Portes du Soleil. True the bars are quiet, and close early (not the place for wild night-life), but there are some pleasant and relatively inexpensive restaurants, some of which are in the hotels.

My recommendation of accommodation is "La Renardiere". Spacious, beautifully and traditionally furnished, and clean s/c apartments (nothing like the monstrosities of Tignes etc - proper beds, not camp beds) in a family run chalet style building, with swimming pool, games room, sauna etc. They'll provide breakfasts at small extra charge (room service or in breakfast room) if required, but there's a great bread/patisserie shop in the village and the 10 minute early morning stroll to get the baguettes and croissants clears the head. We tend to cook for ourselves a couple of nights (big Champion supermarket on edge of town has everything at good prices - including a good range of wines) and eat out the rest.

We drive out, but tend then to leave the car in the car park and use the bus service to get to the gondola. Renardiere is on a 15 minute 'loop' (so 7 minutes from the lift) and the bus is regular (every 15 mins from about 8.00-10.00 and similarly in the evenings, every 30 mins middle of the day) and reliable. Since it is also at the end of the route, the bus is always empty in the morning - first on board and always a seat available. Timetables available from the reception desk and pinned up in the ski/boot room.

Why am I telling you this ... it's been my little secret until now!
