Snow overview for Austria
Monday 26 June 2017

It was a warm day across Austria on Monday 26th June, with a mixture of sun and clouds for most resorts.

At Kaprun (70cm) the temperature reached +16C at mid mountain level, which allowed for skiing on soft snow across the open pistes.

Of our three other open Austrian resorts, Molltal Glaicer (280cm) currently boasts the best base depth, and was running three lifts on Monday.

Elsewhere, Pitzal is due to open for skiing on 1st July.

We went as a family of grown ups for Christmas and it was great to ski at Christmas (expensive accomodation though). It was one of the worst years for snow and yet they still managed to get some good pistes grooomed and skiing well. Despite the usual snow sugar from the cannons, we had a good ski, even our experts. We had stayed before - at the end of last season - and thats the party time. Christmas was still busy enough for our lads to enjoy (too much perhaps) the apres ski, though not as wild as April was when we avoided the town centre and the hordes of young people having a good time that we are now too old to enjoy! Food is good and though more than some Austrian resorts, a hell of a lot cheaper than France, and a visit to Obergurgl was good - though watch out as we and others got caught when we wanted a second day at Obergurgl as the valley pass is not truly a valley pass - you only get one day in Obergurgl for that and pay £50 per person for an extra! Otherwise, its good value. Visit the Hohe Mut mountain restaurant at Obergurgl for one of the most stunning views anywhere in the Alps that you can get to without crampons!
