Snow overview for Austria
Thursday 26 February 2015

It’s a great week to be in Austria as fresh snow fell in all of our featured resorts in the past 48 hours. All resorts are either reporting powdery or fresh conditions but rest assured, there are fresh pistes and pockets of fresh powder on offer.

By far the most recorded snow came around the Salzberg region with Kaprun (100/310cm) and Zell am See (15/123cm) reporting excellent conditions, particularly at the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier where around 40cm was reported to have settled. This has brought fresh powder off the track and fresh pistes, which have been packed down and groomed to perfection.  Zell am See and Kaprun had all of their lifts turning, with a total of 47 to get you around the mountains.

We’re expecting more clouds to form this weekend which could bring fresh snow to many parts of Austria. It has been quite changeable recently so do keep an eye on local forecasts but most of all get out there and enjoy the excellent conditions.

Having read through a few reviews, I am slightly confused with the negative comments about the slopes and the little quaint town of söll.

Having skied here for several years (always in January), I have never had a single, bad experience - both skiing and apres ski / evening dining.

No, I'm not easily pleased and I am, without arrogance, very well travelled.

Söll is, of course, a budget ski resort but the Skiwelt region is certainly, one of the largest and well-managed ski regions in europe and rivals some North American resorts!

I have stated several times in the Garni-Tenne and perhaps over the years, their pricing has increased but they have also invested nicely in the new sauna and spa on the top floor. Their service is personal and friendly and they are located in the heart of town opposite 2 very good value ski hire shops who always have plenty of good quality equipment available.

Yes, the reviews about a few rowdy pubs full of drinkers are true but there are also lots of traditional gasthoff hotels with small bars and great, bavarian beers. There are good choices for eating out if you have a walk through town for 15 minutes and look; virtually every hotel has a nice bar and restaurant for all being welcome.

We always take a pre-booked, shared minicab from the airport and 'andis taxis' are highly recommended. Its €60 each way for reference.

On-slope restaurants are in abundance and although the choice is pretty similar in each, they are efficiently run and service is swift and food is fine.

I love Austria for skiing simply for the greener and forest routes - so much nicer than glacial and rocky resorts. Okay, you're guaranteed good snow for the latter but I've never had a bad experience yet in the Tirol resorts. Fingers crossed I'm okay for next Tuesday when I'm back again. Hopefully this review will give me good snow :)
