Snow overview for USA
Thursday 05 March 2015

The sun was shining at most of our featured resorts in the Rockies on Thursday 5th March, aside from a few clouds lingering in parts of Colorado. Some huge amounts of snow have been recorded in the past week, with Aspen (206cm) leading our featured resorts with 109cm in the past seven days. Most resorts in Colorado have seen upwards of 60cm, leading to some amazing powder conditions. Utah did not miss out either, with Alta (226cm) and Snowbird (226cm) seeing storm totals in excess of half a metre. With sunny skies forecast for the weekend, the conditions will be fantastic.

The new snow that fell over the weekend in California has bedded down thanks to some sunny and mild weather in recent days. Following the snow, slightly more terrain has been opened up at Heavenly (99cm), Mammoth (107cm) and Squaw Valley (147cm) although many lifts still remain closed. Another sunny and mild spell of weather is forecast before a change on Tuesday which will hopefully bring some welcome snowfall.

Across on the east coast, yet more snow has been picked up this week. The pistes are in excellent condition in all four of the main skiing states (Maine, New England, New York and Vermont) and some nice stashes of fresh powder are there to be found in the glades and trees. Smuggler’s Notch (71/97cm), Stowe (76/152cm) and Sugarbush (25/183cm) are perhaps in the best condition as they caught the most new snow – between 8 and 10cm. Mostly cloudy skies are forecast, with around 10-20cm of snow expected in favoured spots by Tuesday.

Think the overview is a little out of date now. There is a large and typical US "Village" at the bottom of the slopes. Lots of accommodation, bars, shops and restaurants all in a pedestrianised setting surrounded by the mountains. Lots of skiing. Run back to the village a little soft in the afternoon, but stay high there is plenty of choice. Very different from a European ski holiday. Après ski If you want it in the Village, but not as extensive or noisy as most Alpine Resorts. Evening revolves more around restaurants, and a car is a necessity. Lake Tahoe is beautiful and the views of the lake reflecting the mountains are worth the visit alone.
