Snow overview for Austria
Thursday 23 February 2017

Thursday 23rd was a largely sunny day across our featured Austrian resorts. Temperatures ranged from around freezing level at higher glacial resorts such as Hintertux (70/180cm), right up to about +10C for resorts in the Ski Welt (50/60cm) such as Ellmau, Hopfgarten, Scheffau and Soll.

Towards the Obergurl region the slopes remain in a good state. Upper runs at Pitzal (159/196cm) and Kaunertal (36/270cm) are packed and well groomed which was creating some lovely on piste conditions for carving turns.

In contrast many other resorts are experiencing some searly spring conditions due to the pistes softening in the strong sun. Notable examples of this can be seen at Kirchberg (69/81cm) and Kitzbuhel (69/71cm), so be sure to head out early for some of the best skiing.

Only a couple of resorts at present could really do with some fresh snow to improve the state of affairs. In the east at Bad Kleinkirchheim (25/45cm) the slopes are largely artificial and are now appearing as strips of snow on an otherwise bare mountain. Whilst in the west, the lower runs at Brand (10/100cm) are also made largely from snow cannons. For the best skiing at both of these resorts, stick to the runs at a higher elevation.

Friday 24th is likely to bring the next snowfall to Austria, with accumulations predicted to be around 10-20cm in most resorts. Saturday 25th is then predicted to be a day of clear skies with some clouds then rolling in on Sunday.

World Class? That depends on what you want... PART ONE

I believe this review is honest and accurate, offering a fair reflection on St Anton and its surrounds. I hope people find it useful as I can’t help but notice that many of the published reviews on St Anton suffer from copy & paste journalism and are, at best, economical with all the facts.

I visited St Anton with 3 friends in early March 2016, my first time there since two holidays approx. 15 and 20 years before. We are all experienced skiers; I have as an adult skied for over 35 weeks, on a total of 30+ separate holidays to 20+ different resorts in Europe and Canada.

St Anton and its associated resorts position themselves as “World Class” “Top 10”, but I believe this to be true for only certain skiers and boarders, the reasons for which I set out below.

The resort runs of St Anton itself – i.e. those within its immediate confines [so excluding Lech, Zurs & Warth etc] – are not extensive. As a consequence they can be very busy and thus become quickly worn out/chopped up. Their poor condition is further exacerbated by the fact that the pistes tend not to be ‘bashed’ frequently and that the resort suffers from a lot of freeze and thaw, resulting in areas of ice.

It is not uncommon to encounter large clumps of soft snow, hard moguls and ice all on the same run. Add to this the fact that the run is likely to be busy with many skiers and boarders of varying ability and the skiing will certainly be challenging. You will not be gently cruising around on a smooth well-prepared run.

A good example of the issue is the ‘happy valley’ run, which turns into the home run past the KK and Mooserwirt to the Gampen and Galzig lifts. This is often very busy and in poor condition, the same can also be said of the red run down from the Rendl and the long blue down to Stuben.
